There’s already been a case of an X-Men member officially becoming an Avenger, and it could happen again in the upcoming Avengers: Doomsday film. Seven X-Men characters – Gambit, Mystique, Professor X, Magneto, Beast, Cyclops, and Nightcrawler – are confirmed to appear alongside the Avengers as they battle Doctor Doom, played by Robert Downey, Jr.
Right now, we don’t know exactly what role they’ll play in future conflicts. But we do know these characters will come from different universes within the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Recent movies like Deadpool & Wolverine, The Marvels, and Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness have established that exploring alternate realities is how Marvel intends to introduce the X-Men and integrate them into the MCU.
Considering all of this, it’s logical that the team’s appearance in Avengers: Doomsday will be a brief partnership with the Avengers and Fantastic Four. However, this doesn’t necessarily mean that all of them will disappear once the story is over.
Beast Is A Major Member Of The Avengers
Because the Avengers have been around for so long, with many different teams and members joining and leaving, a huge number of characters have been considered Avengers in Marvel Comics. This surprisingly includes characters from the X-Men, like Gambit, Rogue, Storm, Wolverine, and even Deadpool.
While many X-Men have joined different Avengers teams since the 2000s, Beast (Hank McCoy) has a much longer history with the Avengers. He’s been a member of the team since 1976, making his connection to them far more established than most other X-Men.
Beast became a regular member of the Avengers comic book team in the late 1970s, fighting alongside well-known heroes like Captain America, Iron Man, Thor, Black Panther, Vision, and Scarlet Witch. He participated in many of the team’s most important events, including Wonder Man’s return to life, Carol Danvers becoming an Avenger, the huge fight against Count Nefaria, and the attempt by Chthon to take control of Scarlet Witch.
Even after leaving the main team, Beast has always maintained a strong connection to the Avengers, returning for multiple appearances and team-ups over the years. Notably, during the major ‘Avengers vs. X-Men’ event in the 2010s, Marvel had Beast side with the Avengers.
The MCU’s Beast Could Permanently Join The Avengers In Doomsday
To connect Kelsey Grammar’s character to the broader Marvel universe, the upcoming Avengers: Doomsday film could build on his history with the Avengers. His recent appearance in The Marvels – making him the second mutant from the Fox Marvel films (following Professor X) to join the MCU – suggests he’ll play a significant role in the ongoing multiverse storyline.
Marvel is likely planning to introduce a new, younger team of X-Men into the Marvel Cinematic Universe, which means the actors who played those characters in the previous Fox films might not continue in those roles. However, with so many X-Men characters to choose from, Beast might be one they don’t recast. In that case, Marvel could simply continue using Kelsey Grammer’s version of the character within the main MCU timeline and avoid introducing a new one.
Going this route seems logical, particularly because Beast could step in as the team’s scientific expert now that Iron Man is gone and Bruce Banner’s involvement is uncertain. With no confirmed plans for Banner in the upcoming conflict, and without someone like Shuri joining the Avengers, Beast would be a great fit to fill that crucial role.
Bringing Beast into the Avengers could also create a really fun and faithful relationship based on the comics. In the original stories, Wonder Man and Beast have a famously close friendship, and it would be great to see that play out in the movies if Beast stays with the team beyond the Avengers: Doomsday storyline.
