The first season of A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms has finished, but it didn’t reveal whether Dunk (played by Peter Claffey) officially became a knight under the guidance of Sir Arlan of Pennytree (Danny Webb). Showrunner Ira Parker recently explained the reasoning behind keeping Dunk’s knighthood a secret throughout the season.
Was Dunk knighted in A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms?
The final flashback shows Dunk asking Sir Arlan why he never made him a knight. According to one of the show’s creators, Sir Arlan might have actually knighted Dunk by the end of the scene. However, the creators decided not to reveal whether this happened, leaving it a mystery for viewers.
Ira Parker explained to Collider that Dunk never received a knighthood from Ser Arlan in that moment. Dunk questions why he wasn’t knighted, but then Ser Arlan dies, seemingly ending the possibility. However, Ser Arlan returns, and the scene continues with him ordering Dunk to retrieve his sword, after which he knights him. Parker confirmed that the outcome of this scene remains deliberately unclear, as per George R.R. Martin’s request, leaving it open to interpretation for the audience.
Parker described the story as an exploration of what truly makes a knight—whether someone is born into the role or must prove themselves worthy, even after receiving the title. He questioned if someone could become a knight even without ever being officially recognized as one.
Throughout the first season, it’s unclear if Dunk will officially become a knight. However, his good nature convinces Prince Baelor Targaryen (Bertie Carvel) that he deserves recognition as a hedge knight. Once Baelor acknowledges Dunk’s background, he allows him to participate in the tournament at Ashford Meadow.
