The show Young Sheldon gave viewers a detailed look at the early life of the beloved character from The Big Bang Theory. Instead of the adult genius we were familiar with, we saw Sheldon Cooper as a nine-year-old boy growing up in East Texas. He was incredibly intelligent for his age, but still had to navigate the normal challenges of childhood – making friends, dealing with family, and finding his place at school. The humor came from watching a child who could grasp complex scientific ideas struggle with simple social situations and sibling rivalry.
People returned to the show for more than just Sheldon’s unique personality. It was the entire Cooper family that kept him relatable, something numbers and formulas couldn’t achieve. Set against the backdrop of the late 1980s and fueled by Mary’s unwavering love, the show highlighted George Sr.’s flawed but genuine efforts as a father, Meemaw’s sharp humor, and the bonds with his siblings. Ultimately, it demonstrated that even someone exceptionally gifted still needs the support and understanding of family.
Over seven seasons, Young Sheldon became much more than just a show setting up The Big Bang Theory; it proved how popular spin-offs can be. Now that the series has ended and the Cooper family’s story is complete, the actors are all pursuing new opportunities and personal interests.
Iain Armitage (Sheldon Cooper)

CBS
Iain Armitage’s portrayal of young Sheldon felt incredibly natural and authentic. He perfectly captured a bright, somewhat difficult, but genuinely sincere child. He was the heart of the show, constantly trying to understand his family just as meticulously as he solved complex problems. Throughout the series, his performance beautifully showed Sheldon’s gradual development of curiosity, empathy, and self-assurance, all while maintaining the lovable qualities that made him so special.
The atmosphere on set noticeably changed when he relaxed, and the entire cast followed suit. Richard Armitage’s calm and steady presence was the key to the cast’s genuine and heartwarming chemistry. Since the show ended, he’s been consistently working, with roles in popular projects like Big Little Lies, and voice work in Scoob! and PAW Patrol: The Movie. He’s also been pursuing personal interests, including getting his pilot’s license – the rumors are true! There’s even talk of him potentially returning to Big Little Lies in the future.
Zoe Perry (Mary Cooper)

CBS
Zoe Perry beautifully portrayed Mary Cooper, Sheldon’s deeply religious mother, with a calm and reassuring energy. She was a protective yet independent figure, naturally funny, and provided a sense of stability amidst the family’s eccentricities. Taking on a role made famous by her own mother could have been challenging, but Perry avoided simply recreating the past and instead offered a fresh, nuanced portrayal of Mary – kind-hearted but with an inner strength.
Emily Perry has found success after her role on Young Sheldon. She previously worked on shows like Scandal and The Family, which helped her gain recognition. Since Young Sheldon ended, she’s continued to be involved with the world of the Cooper family, appearing in the spin-off Georgie & Mandy’s First Marriage. She also made a guest appearance as Officer Binkowski in two episodes of The Conners.
Lance Barber (George Cooper Sr.)

CBS
As a huge fan of that show, I always loved Lance Barber’s portrayal of George Sr. He wasn’t afraid to make him a little rough around the edges, which made him feel so real. It wasn’t about making George perfect, but showing his everyday struggles and quiet dignity. He just felt like a normal dad – going to work, dealing with family, being a part of his community, and loving fiercely even when he was exhausted. Whenever George laughed, it was infectious, and his mistakes actually felt important. Lance Barber really made those small moments resonate and that’s why so many of us connected with the character.
The actor brought a strong background in comedy to Young Sheldon, having previously appeared in shows like The Comeback and It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia. He continued to excel in roles that showcased his subtly funny and engaging personality. He also voiced a character on Disney Channel’s Big City Greens and made a return appearance in Georgie & Mandy’s First Marriage, which was a nice connection to his earlier work.
Raegan Revord (Missy Cooper)

CBS
Raegan Revord perfectly played Missy Cooper, Sheldon’s twin sister, with a great combination of dry wit and the typical exasperation of an older sibling. Missy’s quick, funny comments and eye rolls were surprisingly effective, making the family’s craziness feel relatable and keeping Sheldon grounded without falling into predictable character patterns. Revord brought a natural, easygoing quality to the role, allowing Missy to be both clever and sensitive, and truly stand out as her own unique character.
Since the end of Young Sheldon, Iain Armitage Revord’s life has expanded in meaningful ways. They use they/them pronouns and recently became a published author with their young adult novel, Rules for Fake Girlfriends, which will be released in 2025 – something they’ve always dreamed of as a lifelong book lover. They’ve also continued to be involved with the Big Bang Theory universe through Georgie & Mandy’s First Marriage, and have openly discussed the challenges of growing up in the public eye while carefully choosing projects that are important to them.
Montana Jordan (Georgie Cooper Jr.)

CBS
Montana Jordan brilliantly brought Georgie to life as a charming troublemaker – a bit of a hustler, but also a surprisingly sweet big brother, and he spoke with a very authentic drawl. Jordan highlighted both the humor in Georgie’s mistakes and the heartfelt moments when he tried his best, even when things were difficult. Throughout seven seasons, Georgie grew from a scheming teenager into a young father, and Jordan perfectly captured that change, balancing Georgie’s playful attitude with genuine emotion.
After the show ended, Jordan really came into his own. He confidently returned to his role as Georgie in Georgie & Mandy’s First Marriage. In his personal life, he married Jenna Weeks in 2025 and they had a child in 2024. His early film, The Legacy of a Whitetail Deer Hunter, is a charming reminder of where his career began.
Annie Potts (Connie “Meemaw” Tucker)

CBS
Annie Potts truly made Meemaw the heart of the show. She played her as tough, humorous, and incredibly devoted, with a remarkable ability to switch from a stern expression to genuine warmth. Potts brought Meemaw to life through details like her glasses, her down-to-earth advice, and a playfully scolding attitude that always felt loving. She connected the different generations of the Cooper family, making their world feel both vibrant and a little unpredictable – just like a real grandmother with plenty of stories and a hidden spare key.
Annie Potts has had a long and successful career, consistently bringing charm to every role she plays. From classic films like Ghostbusters and Pretty in Pink to beloved animated characters like Bo Peep in Toy Story and Edmée in I Heart Arlo, she’s showcased her talent across many genres. Potts recently shared her honest opinion about the end of Young Sheldon, calling it a misguided decision, but framing it as an observation from someone with years of experience in the industry. She’s now preparing for her next role as Aunt Joan in ITV’s Best Medicine.
Wallace Shawn (Dr. John Sturgis)

CBS
Wallace Shawn beautifully portrays Dr. John Sturgis, one of Sheldon’s first mentors. Dr. Sturgis isn’t just a funny character; he shows us that intelligence can also be gentle, a little awkward, and always eager to learn. Shawn’s performance softens Sheldon’s more intense traits, and their interactions often feel like heartwarming lessons about accepting and celebrating individuality.
Shawn Sturgis was a truly memorable teacher, known for both his insightful lessons and unique personality. Beyond his role on Young Sheldon, Shawn has had a remarkably diverse career. He’s widely recognized as Vizzini from The Princess Bride and as the voice of Rex in the Toy Story films, a role he still performs. More recently, he’s appeared in movies like Marriage Story, The Addams Family 2, and Toy Story 5, and provided voice work for series such as He-Man and the Masters of the Universe and Bubble Guppies. He also starred as Father Frank Ignatius in CBS’s Evil.
Matt Hobby (Pastor Jeff Difford)

CBS
Matt Hobby’s character, Pastor Jeff, had a subtle but impactful presence on the show. He didn’t appear in every episode, but whenever he did, he brought a charming blend of humor and heart to the church storyline, making it feel genuine and relatable. Hobby played Jeff as both endearingly clumsy and unexpectedly insightful, enriching Sheldon’s world and adding depth to the overall narrative.

As a big fan of character actors, I always loved how Pastor Jeff brought so much life to the quirky world of Young Sheldon – he really showed us that show wasn’t just about the Coopers! And speaking of actors I admire, Jim Parsons’ co-star, Hobby, has been seriously gaining momentum since Young Sheldon ended in 2024. He’s been consistently good in things like Boardwalk Empire and Hart of Dixie, but now he’s really branching out. I’ve been enjoying seeing him in streaming shows and independent films, like his roles in Fresh Off the Boat, Your Pretty Face Is Going to Hell, and Georgie & Mandy’s First Marriage. He’s definitely one to watch!
Emily Osment (Mandy McAllister)

CBS
Emily Osment played Mandy McAllister on Young Sheldon starting in later seasons. As a sweet and quirky neighbor of the Coopers, she became Georgie’s girlfriend and then wife, bringing a relatable humor and warmth to the family. Osment’s natural comedic timing and charm made the storyline about becoming a young parent feel genuine and believable.
The connection between Emily Osment and Montana Jordan really energized the later episodes of the show, and she’s clearly important to the new spin-off. But Osment’s career goes way back – many fans remember her as Lilly on Hannah Montana and Gerti Giggles from Spy Kids. More recently, she’s been in shows like Young & Hungry, Pretty Smart, and The Kominsky Method. Beyond acting, Osment also makes music as Bluebiird, having released independent songs and an EP called When I Loved You.
Mckenna Grace (Paige Swanson)

CBS
Mckenna Grace played Paige, a remarkably intelligent child who, unlike Sheldon, faced real difficulties growing up. She served as a great contrast to Sheldon, and Grace skillfully portrayed both Paige’s brilliance and her emotional side, making her character very memorable. Paige challenged Sheldon, helped him see himself, and even offered friendship, with her story focusing on the experience of being unique.
Since 2017, Grace has quickly become a prominent young actress in Hollywood. She first gained attention in the film Gifted and has since appeared in major movies like Captain Marvel and Ghostbusters: Afterlife, including the 2024 sequel. Turning 19 in 2025, she’s talked about taking on more mature roles. Recent examples of her work include leading roles in the film adaptation of Regretting You and Five Nights at Freddy’s 2. Beyond acting, Grace is also pursuing music, having released songs and two EPs – Bittersweet 16 and Autumn Leaves – through Photo Finish Records.
