People are asking where the new show, A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms, fits into the overall Game of Thrones story. Because the trailer didn’t feature any familiar characters, fans are eager to understand how it relates to the original series.
Here are the details on the show’s timeline.
When A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms takes place in Game of Thrones timeline explained
The series A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms is based on George R.R. Martin’s Tales of Dunk and Egg, beginning with The Hedge Knight. The story is set about 90 years before the events of Game of Thrones, during the rule of King Aerys I Targaryen in 209 AC.
The new show is set almost 80 years after the Targaryen civil war depicted in House of the Dragon, placing it in the timeline between that series and the events of the Dance of the Dragons.
Here’s a brief overview of all three:
- House of the Dragon takes place approximately between 101 and 131 AC. The Dance of the Dragons occurs from 129 to 131 AC
- A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms is set between 209 and 212 AC
- Game of Thrones begins in 297 AC. Since the book series is ongoing, it hasn’t reached its conclusion and is currently around 300 AC. However, the show ended the story around 305 AC.
The Tales of Dunk and Egg series consists of three novellas, and the upcoming TV show plans to cover one novella per season. Season one will focus on the story from the first book, The Hedge Knight. The following two seasons will then adapt The Sworn Sword and The Mystery Knight in order.
The story begins with Ser Duncan the Tall, a knight from the poor district of Flea Bottom, inheriting the weapons and duties of his former master, Ser Arlan of Pennytree, after Arlan’s death. Dunk then journeys to the Ashford Meadow to participate in a jousting tournament, and during his travels, he gains a young squire named Egg.
