What Is ‘Keeper’ About? 2025’s Most Secretive Horror Movie Has Been Revealed

Osgood Perkins is a filmmaker who consistently reinvents himself with each new project. He loves playing with different genres, having delved into satanic horror with The Blackcoat’s Daughter, supernatural thrillers like I Am the Pretty Thing Who Lives in the House, stories about serial killers and the occult in Longlegs, and even an adaptation of Stephen King with The Monkey. His newest film, Keeper, has been kept largely under wraps, with the studio, Neon, revealing very little except the lead actress, Tatiana Maslany, and a few intriguing, but vague, hints that it would be another unsettling experience. But now, Neon has finally given a full look at the highly anticipated movie, and I’ve seen it. I can finally share some of its dark secrets with you.

I first heard about Keeper back in May 2024, quite a while before The Monkey came out and showed everyone what Tatiana Maslany and director Spencer Perkins are capable of together. But honestly, even after seeing their work in The Monkey, Keeper still managed to completely surprise me. If I’ve learned anything from Perkins’ films, it’s that he’s a master of suspense, constantly keeping you guessing with unexpected twists and turns.

What Is ‘Keeper’ Actually About?

Tatiana Maslany stars as Liz, an artist who travels with her boyfriend, Malcolm (Rossif Sutherland), to his family’s remote cabin. After a year of dating, Liz is starting to doubt Malcolm’s commitment. He seems perfect – a successful doctor with a kind personality and good looks – but Liz feels he’s keeping secrets and isn’t being completely honest with her.

I’m really invested in this couple’s weekend getaway. They were hoping for some quality time in this beautiful cabin, you know, the kind that could either make their relationship stronger or fall apart. But things started going wrong almost immediately. First, a relative showed up unexpectedly, then Malcolm had to rush back to the city for work. But the worst part is, Liz started getting this creepy feeling like she wasn’t alone. It turns out someone – or something – is hiding in the shadows, just watching and waiting. It’s seriously unsettling, and I’m on the edge of my seat to find out what’s going on!

‘Keeper’ Is Folk Horror, Steeped in Ritual and Lore

Soon after Malcolm leaves Liz by herself in the cabin, she starts experiencing strange and frightening things. While director Osgood Perkins is known for his interest in the occult, this film steps away from those themes to delve into something older and more disturbing. Though it’s closer to folk horror than a traditional fairy tale, Keeper still shares similarities with Perkins’ Gretel & Hansel – particularly its unsettling take on folklore and its use of creepy, atmospheric settings.

I won’t give away too much about what happens at the end, but Malcolm had a very specific reason for bringing Liz to his family’s cabin. Liz had a bad feeling about things, and she was right – Malcolm isn’t being truthful about who he is. However, she couldn’t have imagined the dark secrets he’s hiding. There are also dangerous creatures hiding around the cabin – young witches who are waiting for a planned sacrifice. And Malcolm has definitely made sacrifices of his own to get where he is today.

Tatiana Maslany’s Performance Will Break You

The final act of Keeper really challenges Tatiana Maslany as an actress, demanding a wide range of emotions. However, anyone familiar with her work in Orphan Black or the first season of Perry Mason will know she handles it beautifully. Maslany delivers a performance that feels completely natural, making her character, Liz, incredibly relatable – someone you could easily imagine being friends with or even falling for. She embodies Liz so fully that she feels like a real person, which is essential for the powerful and realistic events of the final act, especially a confrontation that feels strikingly authentic and drawn from real life.

The movie builds to a truly memorable final scene – one that many horror fans, including me, will find wonderfully disturbing. Even days after watching Keeper, I’m still analyzing the subtle interactions between the characters Liz and Malcolm, and how the film uses the conventions of folk horror to cleverly explore the awkward and sometimes unsettling experience of introducing a partner to your family for the first time.
