Fans of The Girl With The Dragon Tattoo may be interested to learn that a TV series is in the works – though Amazon previously attempted a similar project. The original Swedish psychological thriller novel, The Girl With The Dragon Tattoo (known as Men Who Hate Women in Swedish), was written by Stieg Larsson and first published in 2005. It quickly became a huge success around the world.

After the popularity of The Girl With The Dragon Tattoo, it was adapted into both Swedish and English-language films. The Swedish film starred Michael Nyqvist and Noomi Rapace, while David Fincher directed the English version featuring Daniel Craig and Rooney Mara. Additionally, a six-part Swedish TV series was created, covering the plot of the following two books in the series.

A new TV series based on The Girl With The Dragon Tattoo is in the works. This might seem familiar, as Amazon had previously started developing a TV adaptation of the book, but this new project is separate from that effort.

Sky Is Developing A Girl With The Dragon Tattoo TV Show

More than twenty years after the book was first published, The Girl With The Dragon Tattoo is coming to television in English thanks to Sky. According to Variety, Sky has greenlit a TV series based on the novel, with Steve Lightfoot and Angela LaManna writing and also serving as executive producers.

I’m so excited to hear that a new adaptation of The Girl With The Dragon Tattoo is finally happening! Apparently, filming is set to start this spring, and they’re shooting in Lithuania. What’s really interesting is that, as of right now, they haven’t announced any of the actors yet. It’s great to know this project, being developed by Sky, is already further along than the one Amazon had in the works. I’m really looking forward to seeing how this all comes together!

Amazon’s Girl With The Dragon Tattoo TV Show Didn’t Go Past Development

In 2020, Amazon announced plans for a TV series based on The Girl With The Dragon Tattoo, but with a fresh take. Instead of directly adapting Stieg Larsson’s book (or its sequels), the show was described as a completely new, modern story inspired by the original.

Amazon was slow to provide updates on its planned series of The Girl With The Dragon Tattoo. While they did name a new showrunner in 2023, the project never moved forward. With Sky now announcing their own adaptation, it’s clear Amazon has abandoned their plans.

Sky Has A Huge Challenge Ahead With Its Girl With The Dragon Tattoo TV Show

I was really excited to hear Sky is making a series based on The Girl With The Dragon Tattoo, but I do think they have a tough job ahead of them. The Swedish versions of the Millennium books were fantastic and stayed really true to the original story. And then David Fincher’s movie was amazing too, only making a few small changes. So, whatever Sky does, it’s got a lot to live up to!

The series stumbled with the 2018 film, The Girl in the Spider’s Web, which was the first installment not based on a novel by Stieg Larsson. Frankly, it felt very different from Larsson’s original Millennium trilogy, almost disrespectful to his work, and unfortunately, the movie adaptation wasn’t good either.

As a long-time fan of The Girl With The Dragon Tattoo, I was cautiously excited about the new Sky series. It’s facing a tough challenge – not only does it have to live up to the excellent Swedish films and David Fincher’s version, but it also needs to erase the memory of that disappointing Spider’s Web sequel. Still, I’m hopeful that Sky’s take will succeed where Amazon’s attempt ultimately fell short, and I’m really looking forward to seeing what they’ve done with the story.
