What Chiron Told Annabeth in Percy Jackson Season 2 Episode 2: The Great Prophecy Explained

Warning: This article includes SPOILERS for Percy Jackson season 2 episodes 1 & 2!

In season 2, episode 2 of Percy Jackson and the Olympians, Chiron reveals a huge secret to Annabeth. Here’s everything she finds out. The popular Percy Jackson book series by Rick Riordan has become a fantastic fantasy show, and after a successful first season, it’s returned to television after a two-year wait.

Just two episodes into season 2 of Percy Jackson, a lot has already happened! Grover has been taken by Polyphemus, Thalia’s tree is poisoned, and Percy is plagued by troubling dreams about Kronos. Things are quickly falling apart for Camp Half-Blood. To make matters worse, when Percy and Annabeth return, Chiron reveals a huge secret to Annabeth.

Even though the show didn’t reveal any details on screen, we already knew from before the season started that the story of the Great Prophecy would begin earlier than anticipated. Annabeth all but confirms this during her conversation with Percy on the beach. Here’s a breakdown of the Great Prophecy and what it means for Percy Jackson.

The Great Prophecy Foretells A Half-Blood Child Who Can Decide Olympus’ Fate

During a video call, Chiron explains to Annabeth why Percy Jackson is so crucial. Being Poseidon’s son isn’t just about Percy’s strength—it’s because he might be the key to fulfilling a frightening prophecy known as The Great Prophecy, as detailed in the book. Chiron then shares the prophecy itself.

“A half-blood of the eldest gods,

Shall reach sixteen against all odds,

And see the world in endless sleep,

The hero’s soul, cursed blade shall reap,

A single choice shall end his days,

Olympus to preserve or raze.”

Zeus, Poseidon, and Hades are considered the oldest gods – they were the three sons of Kronos. After World War II, the Oracle of Delphi made a prediction – known as the Great Prophecy – that led these gods to decide against having any more children.

The exact words of the prophecy matter a lot. Since “half-blood” means someone who is half-human and half-god, Percy is the only one who can fulfill it at the beginning of Percy Jackson and the Olympians season 2. Also, the author, Rick Riordan, actually wrote “raze,” which means to destroy, not “raise.” This means Olympus will either be saved or completely destroyed.

Percy is unique among the children of the powerful Big Three gods. While Hades has two children stuck in a timeless loop at the Lotus Hotel (briefly seen in the first season of Percy Jackson and the Olympians), and Zeus’ daughter Thalia is transformed into a tree, Percy is the only one who’s reached the age of sixteen. This makes him both incredibly significant and potentially very dangerous.

Depending on whose side he’s on, he could be a huge advantage or a major threat. Because Kronos can influence his thoughts and dreams, it’s easy to see how he could be manipulated. This is why Chiron is keeping him in the dark, and why Annabeth might turn against her friend.

The Great Prophecy Isn’t Revealed In Full Until Rick Riordan’s The Last Olympian

While the idea of The Great Prophecy appears in season 2 of Percy Jackson and the Olympians, the full text isn’t revealed until The Last Olympian, the fifth book in Rick Riordan’s series.

Up until now, those with one divine parent, particularly Percy, have only heard fragments of the prophecy. He understands that a child of one of the three most powerful gods is seen as a threat and could potentially change things on Mount Olympus, but he’s still missing the complete picture and doesn’t know what’s truly at risk.

Chiron initially kept the prophecy a secret from Percy to shield him from the burden it would create. He hoped Percy could grow up and decide his own destiny. Chiron also believed Thalia, another powerful child of the Big Three, might fulfill the prophecy instead.

Why The Disney+ TV Show Moved Up The Great Prophecy’s Reveal

In my review of the first two episodes of Percy Jackson and the Olympians season 2, I noted that bringing up The Great Prophecy so early doesn’t really add to the story yet, other than creating tension between Annabeth and Percy. However, the show’s creators have since explained their thinking behind this choice.

According to Executive Producer Craig Silverstein, the prophecy will make Percy understand he has a bigger role in the story than he initially believed. Walker Scobell, the star of Percy Jackson and the Olympians, told Ebaster that the Great Prophecy is essential for keeping the plot moving forward.

How The Great Prophecy Will Impact Annabeth & Percy In The Percy Jackson Season 2

It appears The Great Prophecy will teach Percy a valuable lesson: even small choices can have big consequences for those around him. This realization will be a heavy burden for him to carry, particularly while he’s on his journey.

This will also make him more resistant to Kronos trying to control his mind. It could further strain the relationship between Percy, who now knows what might happen, and Luke, who is trying to turn him against everyone. Annabeth might struggle even more with her feelings for Luke, as he’s both her old friend and the one causing these problems.

Good news for fans! According to Walker Scobell’s comments to Ebaster, this won’t significantly affect the plot this season. He explained that the prophecy will become more important in season 3 of Percy Jackson and the Olympians when a particular character – who won’t be named to avoid spoilers for new viewers – is introduced.

How The Great Prophecy Comes True In The Percy Jackson Books

MAJOR SPOILERS for the entire Percy Jackson & The Olympians book series are ahead!

If you’d prefer to avoid spoilers for the Percy Jackson and the Olympians books, now’s the time to stop reading. From here on, I’ll be explaining the prophecy and the story in detail, step by step.

“A half-blood of the eldest gods”

This situation likely involves Percy Jackson, Thalia Grace, Bianca de Angelo, and Nico de Angelo. Thalia and Bianca stop aging when they become Hunters of Artemis, and Nico is much younger than Percy. Therefore, Percy Jackson is the most likely candidate.

“Shall reach sixteen against all odds,”

Throughout the series, Percy faces life-threatening danger numerous times. By the time the events of The Last Olympian conclude, he’s almost sixteen years old.

“And see the world in endless sleep,”

I remember when everything changed during the Battle of Manhattan. Morpheus used his powers to put all the regular people in the city to sleep, and it was…surreal. But as a demigod, I stayed awake, and it was like watching the world fall into an endless slumber. It was a really strange and unsettling experience.

“The hero’s soul, cursed blade shall reap,”

This section of the prophecy reveals a surprising twist: the hero who dies isn’t Percy, but Luke Castellan. Luke is being controlled by Kronos, but he’s fighting against it. In a desperate move, Luke sacrifices himself to defeat Kronos, using a special blade he previously gave to Annabeth. The blade feels like a burden to him because he broke a promise to be there for Annabeth.

“A single choice shall end his days,”

The key question is whether Percy will hand Annabeth’s sword over to Luke. If Luke hadn’t fought against Kronos’s control, Kronos would have killed Percy. Instead, Luke used the sword to fatally wound himself, ending his own life.

“Olympus to preserve or raze.”

Luke and Percy’s destinies were connected – Percy’s trust in Luke ultimately saved Olympus from destruction. If the planned five seasons of Percy Jackson and the Olympians come to fruition, it will be interesting to see how this story unfolds on screen in season five.
