Welcome To Derry: Pennywise Returns In The Form Of A Pickle Jar

Pennywise the Clown has appeared in many frightening forms, but his appearance in the second episode of It: Welcome to Derry is arguably the strangest yet. This HBO horror series acts as a prequel to the movies It (2017) and It Chapter Two (2019), taking place 27 years before the events of the first film.

The story begins with a young boy running away from home in Derry who accidentally gets into a dangerous car. This is just the first in a series of frightening events that plague the town, as Pennywise continues to terrorize its children, with Clara Stack’s daughter, Lilly Bainbridge, appearing to be a primary target.

Pennywise Turned Into A Pickle Jar Monster To Terrorize Lilly In Welcome To Derry Episode 2

The Villain Haunted The Young Girl

In the second episode of It: Welcome to Derry, Pennywise frightens Lilly while she’s at the grocery store. He does this by bringing her biggest fears to life, and this time, he traps her in an aisle filled with pickle jars. However, one of the jars doesn’t contain pickles – it holds the head of her dead father. Soon after, the jars crash to the floor, revealing disturbing body parts.

Okay, so things get really scary. This… thing, made of all sorts of messed-up body parts, starts forming, and it’s horrifying because it has my dad’s face! It slowly moves towards me, saying it just wants ‘one kiss for papa,’ and then…poof, it’s gone. That vision – it felt like something straight out of It: Welcome to Derry – just completely breaks me down right there in the grocery store. I’m a mess, and it sends me right back to Juniper Hill.

What Really Happened To Lilly’s Dad In It: Welcome To Derry

Lilly’s Father Died In A Pickle Factory

In the second episode of It: Welcome to Derry, Pennywise appears in a form designed to frighten Lilly by referencing the painful experience of her father’s death. Lilly’s dad died at the pickle factory where he worked. The tragedy happened when Lilly and her mother went to pick him up, but he had to go back inside because Lilly left her ring. That’s when everything took a terrible turn.

An elderly worker noticed a machine malfunctioning. While attempting to repair it, he failed to realize it was still running, and tragically became caught in the gears, suffering fatal injuries. This horrific event deeply traumatized his daughter, Lilly, and served as the inspiration for Pennywise’s terrifying form in It: Welcome to Derry.

New episodes of the HBO series Welcome to Derry come out on Sundays at 9 p.m. Eastern and Pacific time. The first season has eight episodes, and the last one will air on December 14th.
