The TV show Watson is back for the fall 2025 season with fresh medical cases for John to solve. This season also explores the world of Sherlock Holmes, featuring the iconic detective played by Robert Carlyle. The new episode, airing on CBS November 17th (and available to stream the next day on Paramount+), will combine a medical mystery with a member of the Holmes family. A preview clip shows how dedicated John is to his patients, and it highlights how Morris Chestnut described the show to TopMob earlier this fall.
In a sneak peek of the upcoming episode, “Buying Time,” Watson, Ingrid, and Sasha investigate the case of Xavier, a young man whose condition rapidly deteriorates. Meanwhile, Mary learns that her ex-husband, Mycroft Holmes, is cutting off funding to the clinic – a consequence of his visit during Sherlock’s recent return. John steps up, offering to personally cover Xavier’s medical expenses. According to CBS, this is just the start of a much larger problem.
Watson and his colleagues are in a desperate race against the clock to save Xavier, a young athlete whose cancer is growing rapidly and appears untreatable. At the same time, Mycroft Holmes warns Watson that the money for their work at UHOP might be cut off.
Usually, funding issues are easily resolved by the end of an episode, but Watson isn’t approaching the Mycroft problem like a routine matter. He unexpectedly revealed at the end of the last episode that he oversees the Holmes Clinic following Sherlock’s supposed death. Since Sherlock is actually still alive – a secret John won’t share – Watson’s involvement creates a difficult situation if the funding isn’t secured.
I don’t expect John to completely fix the Mycroft issue, or find a long-term solution to the financial problems, in just one episode, or even before the next TV season begins after the current show ends. However, John can’t keep paying for patients’ care indefinitely. His team urgently needs to both treat Xavier and figure out what’s causing his illness, as well as understand what Mycroft is really up to.
The way medical drama and supernatural elements mixed together made me think of a conversation I had with Morris Chestnut before the second season aired. He talked about whether he felt the show struck the right balance between those two types of stories.
Absolutely. It feels like I’m getting to play two roles in one show. The medical drama is the core of it, but I really enjoy the detective work too. It adds another layer to the character and makes the job more engaging as an actor. I appreciate being on the medical set, but I also love the challenge of solving puzzles and exploring different environments, like the bar or the cafe – as you saw in the season premiere, with the scene involving Mary and her brother. I find all of it really fulfilling.
As Benedict Cumberbatch (who plays John) pointed out, John kicked off Season 2 by solving a mystery that led to a life-saving diagnosis for Mary’s mother, and also revealed a shocking secret about his former partner. Although the current case in “Buying Time” doesn’t seem as personally connected for John – even with his brother Mycroft involved – it looks like he’ll need to use his detective skills quickly. The actor also explained how the show blends different genres together.
Watson is a contemporary reimagining of the Sherlock Holmes stories, but with a medical twist. It’s a drama focused on solving incredibly rare and challenging medical cases, blending the mystery of detective work with the intricacies of the medical world. It’s not just a medical show; it’s a detective story told through the lens of unusual illnesses.
Don’t miss the next episode of Watson, titled “Buying Time,” on CBS Monday, November 17th at 10 p.m. Eastern. It’s airing right after the latest episode of FBI as part of a new schedule change for both shows this fall. Morris Chestnut believes this pairing will be a success! If you’ve missed any episodes, you can stream them on Paramount+.
