Warner Bros. is heavily invested in relaunching its DC Universe, but initial reactions are mixed. While the recent Superman reboot was a promising start, the first trailer for next year’s Supergirl movie has received criticism, creating some doubt. Despite this, there’s still potential for success, though the shared universe seems to be evolving in an unexpected direction – starting with a reboot of The Cat in the Hat next year.
A new animated comedy based on the classic Dr. Seuss book is coming out on November 6, 2026, after a few delays. Bill Hader stars in the movie, and Xochitl Gomez, Matt Berry, Quinta Brunson, and Paula Pell provide voices for other characters. This film is planned as the start of a larger ‘Seussiverse,’ with animated adaptations of Thing One and Thing Two and Oh the Places You’ll Go! also in the works.
What the ‘Seussiverse’ Will Look Like

Warner Bros.
As a movie buff, I’ve always thought Dr. Seuss – that’s Theodor Geisel, by the way – was just begging for big-screen treatment. The guy wrote over 60 incredible kids’ books before he passed away in ’91, and they’re all so creative and unique! Warner Bros. seems to agree, and they’re kicking things off with a CGI animated musical version of The Cat in the Hat. It’s a classic! The story is about these two kids stuck inside on a rainy day, and then boom – total chaos when the Cat shows up with Thing One and Thing Two. It’s a wild ride – heartwarming, surreal, and just plain fun. Honestly, it’s a perfect story for a movie.
Following the release of The Cat in the Hat, animated musical adaptations of Thing One and Thing Two and Oh, the Places You’ll Go! are planned. These films will use the same computer-generated imagery (CGI) style as The Cat in the Hat. While production delays have made firm release dates uncertain, they are anticipated over the next two years. Each movie will have its own story but share a similar look, feel, and some characters, creating a connected world without the complicated, ongoing storylines often found in franchises like DC and Marvel.
If viewers enjoy this initial stage, the future potential is huge. There are countless characters and settings to explore, opening doors to sequels, spin-offs, team-ups, and fresh takes on the stories. This could allow the studio to build a strong and captivating franchise and universe based on the creative world of Dr. Seuss. However, how this all develops will largely depend on Netflix’s plans for Warner Bros. – whether they prioritize releasing these projects in theaters or focus on streaming them directly to audiences.
Warner Bros. Must Learn From Previous Mistakes

Universal Pictures
This isn’t the first time Dr. Seuss’s stories have been brought to the big screen, and it’s not the first attempt at a full-length The Cat in the Hat movie. That distinction belongs to the 2003 film starring Mike Myers, which was famously unsuccessful. Critics disliked it, it barely made its money back, and it’s often cited as one of the worst movies ever made – essentially a guide on how not to adapt a Dr. Seuss book. The film completely missed the spirit of the author’s work, replacing the charm and imagination with 82 minutes of childish jokes and awkward humor aimed at adults.
While early attempts to adapt the author’s work didn’t fare well, other studios have since had much more success. The 2018 animated film The Grinch was a major box office hit, and Horton Hears a Who! (2008) received strong praise from critics. Both films show that Dr. Seuss stories work best when they focus on heart and creativity, rather than flashy effects. Warner Bros. seems to be heading in the right direction with its animated approach, and if it captures a similar feel to these successful adaptations, a popular and profitable franchise is likely. Choosing to make the films musicals is a risk, but if done well, it could enhance what audiences already love about these stories.
Warner Bros. has a chance to build a successful shared universe with Dr. Seuss characters, and they can learn from the problems they faced with their DC superhero movies. The DC films often suffered from inconsistent moods, overly ambitious plots, and assuming viewers already knew a lot about the characters’ histories. With the ‘Seussiverse,’ Warner Bros. can focus on telling simple, self-contained stories with a consistent feel, while still hinting at a bigger world – avoiding complicated storylines and the need to constantly raise the stakes.
The ‘Seussiverse’ Has a Secret Weapon in the Shape of Jon M. Chu

Universal Pictures
The upcoming movie, based on the book Oh, the Places You’ll Go!, just got a major boost: Jon M. Chu, the director of the hit films Wicked and Wicked: For Good, will be directing. Chu is known for creating visually stunning and emotionally resonant musicals, and his success with Wicked proves he can deliver a spectacular cinematic experience. He’ll also be working with Arianna Grande again, and fans are hoping they can bring the same magic to this new project.

Warner Bros. is starting to build a promising new film universe at a perfect time. 2025 has proven that audiences are getting tired of superhero movies and are now preferring family-friendly and animated films. The year’s biggest hits so far are all animated: Ne Zha 2, Zootopia 2, Lilo & Stitch, and The Minecraft Movie. In comparison, DC’s Superman only reached number 9, and Marvel’s The Fantastic Four: First Steps, Captain America: Brave New World, and Thunderbolts didn’t even make the top ten.
