Rock ‘Em Sock ‘Em Robots, the iconic toy and pop culture staple, is being adapted into a movie. Vin Diesel, known for the Fast & Furious franchise, was previously announced as the star, and now it’s confirmed he’s also writing the screenplay. The film will tell a surprisingly emotional story about the rivalry between the Red Rocker and Blue Bomber robots, focusing on both competition and understanding.
Rock ‘Em Sock ‘Em Robots, first created in 1964, is a classic two-player game where kids control robotic boxers in a yellow ring. Players rapidly press buttons, trying to make their opponent’s head shoot up and ‘knock them out.’ Vin Diesel is set to star in a movie adaptation of the game, and Mattel Studios’ Robbie Brenner has praised his ability to tell compelling stories, describing his vision for the film as imaginative, relatable, and visually impressive, according to Deadline.
Andrew Scannell and Darian Greenbaum from Mattel Studios will be in charge of producing the Rock ‘Em Sock ‘Em Robots movie, with Diesel also producing through his company, One Race Films.
I’m thrilled to add to the world of Mattel by reimagining a beloved toy from my youth for today’s viewers. This story explores how competition impacts a world focused on power, and ultimately shows that true strength lies in kindness and empathy.
More Movies to Come Based on Mattel Toys

Mattel
Mattel, the company behind the blockbuster Barbie movie with Margot Robbie and Ryan Gosling, has big plans for more films! They’re developing movie adaptations of many of their popular toys and games, including Polly Pocket, Magic 8 Ball, Hot Wheels, American Girl, Thomas the Tank Engine, and UNO. Plus, the screenwriter of Zootopia, Phil Johnston, is already working on a script based on the classic View-Master toy.
Director Johnston shared that the View-Master was a beloved childhood toy – and still is. He loved how it allowed him to travel to different places from the comfort of his room, losing himself in the slides for hours without getting in trouble. He hopes to recreate that same sense of wonder and imagination he felt as a child in the 1980s with his new film, as reported by Deadline.
In 2023, Mattel’s CEO, Ynon Kreiz, explained to Variety that the company aimed to create high-quality movies based on their popular toys, with the long-term goal of expanding those into film franchises.
We’re focused on making the first movie great and ensuring it does well. If we succeed, then we can start thinking about sequels. Our goal is to build long-running film series.
