‘Very, Very Accurate’: Chris Evans’ Sci-Fi Hidden Gem Praised by Space Expert 18 Years Later

In 2007, Chris Evans appeared in the sci-fi thriller Sunshine, with Cillian Murphy, Benedict Wong, and Michelle Yeoh. While critics liked the movie, it didn’t do well in theaters. Now, a space expert is pointing out how surprisingly accurate the film’s science actually is.

Astrophysicist Paul M. Sutter recently told Insider that the movie Sunshine is surprisingly accurate from a scientific standpoint. The film, set in 2057, follows a crew of astronauts on a desperate mission to save Earth from an ice age by reigniting the dying Sun with a powerful bomb. While written by Danny Boyle, this critically-minded film remains relatively unknown, possibly because it didn’t perform well in theaters – earning just $34 million despite a $40 million budget. However, 18 years later, Sutter appreciates the film’s merits.

I have to say, what really captivated me was how realistically the film portrayed the Sun itself. Seeing the spacecraft descend, we’re treated to these incredible shots of massive solar flares and arcs – and it genuinely looks like that! The high-resolution imagery really captures just how incredibly dynamic, volatile, and frankly, beautiful, the Sun’s surface is. It’s a stunning visual representation of a truly active star.

According to Sutter, no spacecraft could actually get as close to the Sun as depicted in the film – our technology isn’t advanced enough to survive the heat. While the movie wasn’t entirely realistic, he still appreciated its basis in scientific principles.

Following a scene where characters were cautioned about the dangers of looking at the Sun, Sutter expressed skepticism about the show’s calculations. He pointed out that Earth receives only a tiny fraction – 0.000000045% – of the Sun’s total energy. The character was told they could safely view the Sun at 3.1% of its full brightness, but Sutter isn’t convinced the numbers add up. He stated he wouldn’t rely on the show’s computer-generated calculations and wouldn’t risk it.

Sutter rated the movie Sunshine a 6 out of 10, primarily because of its stunning and accurate depiction of the Sun. While the film wasn’t perfect in other areas, Sutter noted that most people don’t appreciate how beautiful and active the Sun actually is, and the movie captured that well.

In the intense plot of Sunshine, Cillian Murphy played a physicist striving to reignite the sun and save Earth. To prepare for the role, Murphy consulted with physicist Brian Cox, who had previously lauded his performance as a realistic and impressive depiction of a scientist. Murphy fully committed to the part, studying complex physics concepts and even visiting the CERN facility to observe and mimic the behavior of real physicists.

Chris Evans played James Mace, an engineer who was quite different from his usual roles – less focused on academics and more reserved. Evans described his character as calm and collected, able to think clearly even in stressful situations. These two unexpected partners had to work together to save the world.
