Venom’s New Power Upgrade Could Be MCU Game Changer

As of 2026, it’s unclear what role Venom will play in future Marvel Studios movies. Although a part of Eddie Brock’s symbiote is now in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, Venom isn’t currently planned to appear in the upcoming Spider-Man: Brand New Day film. However, a recent increase in his powers in the comics suggests he could become a significant villain in future installments.

A significant power change for Venom was introduced in issue #253, written by Al Ewing and illustrated by Carlos Gomez. Currently, the symbiote – previously linked to both Peter Parker and Eddie Brock – is now bonded with Mary Jane Watson. While neither Mary Jane nor the symbiote are thrilled about this, it became essential after they were both left dangerously weakened and unable to survive independently.

Mary Jane has managed to guide the symbiote towards becoming a true hero. But their journey as the new Venom quickly brought them into conflict with the villain Madame Masque. This sparked a personal feud, leading Madame Masque to destroy the apartment of Mary Jane’s former boyfriend, Paul, after he moved out. Luckily, this event allowed Mary Jane to demonstrate a brand-new ability she and the symbiote had been working on together.

What is Venom’s new power upgrade?

Most of Marvel’s symbiotes, like Venom, are usually hurt by fire and loud sounds. However, Venom recently managed to extinguish flames without being harmed, thanks to a new type of web-fluid that puts fires out. While fire can still injure Venom, this new webbing provides a way to protect against it.

This new ability makes sense given what Venom can already do. Like Spider-Man, Venom and their offspring can create organic webbing, originally based on Spider-Man’s web fluid. Spider-Man often changed the formula to handle different threats, such as creating insulated webbing for fighting Electro. Because of this, and the symbiotes’ natural ability to create and process chemicals (like filtering out poisons to protect their host), Venom can easily create different types of webbing too.

This new ability shown in the comics could be a major advantage if Venom appears again in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. With so many intelligent heroes in the MCU, exploiting the symbiote’s vulnerability to fire is a real possibility. Giving Venom the power to create fire-resistant webs in the movies would help balance the playing field for the character.

Venom #253 is now available at comic shops everywhere.
