Peacock’s new prequel to Friday the 13th, titled Crystal Lake, has a great chance to finally answer a long-standing question about Jason Voorhees – one that fans have debated almost since the beginning of the film series. We’re seeing more and more horror movies get TV show prequels, and these shows often give us a fresh look at the origins of the villains.
Given how famous the Friday the 13th movies are, it’s not surprising that a series exploring Jason Voorhees’s origins is in the works. The new show will stream on Peacock in 2026 and could finally shed light on the mysteries surrounding Friday the 13th.
What’s more, it can finally settle the age-old debate: “Did Jason drown?”
The “Did Jason Drown?” Debate Has Been Going On Since Friday The 13th: Part 2
The first Friday the 13th film claims Pamela Voorhees killed people to avenge her son’s drowning. But ever since an older Jason Voorhees showed up in Friday the 13th: Part 2, people have questioned whether that’s really what happened, and the debate has continued with each new movie. Over time, I’ve identified five main theories about the truth.
- Jason never drowned, and he lived 20 years in the woods as a hermit without ever telling his mom he was alive.
- Jason never drowned, his mom knew, and he helped her with the first movie’s killings.
- Jason drowned, and his mom brought him back with an unknown ritual.
- Jason drowned, and his mom’s death caused a curse that brought him back to life.
- Jason drowned, and his mom brought him back as a deadite.
Each of these interpretations has valid points, but also weaknesses. The film offers conflicting clues – some suggest he drowned, others that he survived – which only complicates things further.
The fact that Jason isn’t shown as a child in the movies suggests he never drowned. Conversely, his repeated resurrections could be explained if he had drowned. Even in the sequels, Jason survives injuries that would kill a normal person, hinting he’s something other than human. His possible status as an undead being would also explain why the mystical Necromicon was found at the Voorhees family home.
Crystal Lake Is The Perfect Time To Give Us A Definitive Answer
With so many believable theories about Jason’s origins, the upcoming Crystal Lake movie has a great chance to finally reveal the truth and settle the debate. As a prequel set roughly ten years before the original film, it’s perfectly positioned to do just that.
Details are limited, but the upcoming film, Crystal Lake, is expected to delve into the relationship between Pamela and Jason Voorhees before his tragic drowning, and how her grief ultimately led to a violent path of revenge. A young Jason has been cast, and the movie will likely reveal the full story of what happened to him.
