‘Under Paris’ Sequel at Netflix Gets Exciting Update

I’ve been waiting for news about the Under Paris sequel for over a year, and finally Netflix has found a director! I’m really excited because they’ve chosen Alexandra Aja, who clearly knows how to make scary movies about creatures in the water. She directed Crawl, with those terrifying alligators, and Piranha 3D too, so I have a good feeling about this!

According to The Hollywood Reporter, Aja is now involved in the project, but it’s unknown why the original director, Xavier Gens, has left. Gens previously mentioned that any sequels would be set in a completely flooded Paris. The film, originally titled Sous la Seine (meaning Under the Seine), centers on a marine researcher named Sophia who must confront her past to protect Paris from a mutated, freshwater shark. It’s a classic low-budget streaming movie that cleverly incorporated the 2024 Summer Olympics – and concerns about the Seine’s water quality – into the plot as a reason for the monster’s appearance.

It will be interesting to see what happens in the sequel to Under Paris, especially considering the first movie ended with sharks spreading to other cities. Will the director’s original idea work out, or will Venice be the setting for the next installment? (Hopefully, they come up with a better title this time!)

Sharks Are All the Rage at Netflix

Netflix

Netflix is clearly interested in making shark movies! Following the surprising success of Under Paris, they’ve acquired another shark thriller directed by Tommy Wirkola, who also directed Violent Night. The film, previously known as Shiver and Beneath the Storm, was originally planned for a theatrical release by Sony, but that fell through. Producers Adam McKay and Kevin Messick of HyperObject Industries then needed to find a new distributor, as reported by Deadline.

We’re thrilled to be collaborating with Netflix again on this new movie! Our previous project with them, Don’t Look Up, was a fantastic experience, and we’re excited to team up again for what we expect will be a major streaming event in 2026.

Currently, the story details are a secret, but we do know the exciting cast! Phoebe Dynevor, famous for Bridgerton, will star alongside Djimon Hounsou, who has been nominated for Oscars twice, and Whitney Peak from The Hunger Games: Sunrise on the Reaping.
