Ultimates Writer Clears the Air About Marvel’s Upcoming End of an Era

There’s been a lot of speculation surrounding the recent choice, prompting those working on the project to publicly address concerns and protect the reputation of the decision-making process, as well as everyone involved in what is now a landmark period for Marvel’s extensive collection of stories.

Deniz Camp, the writer behind *Ultimates* and *Ultimate Incursion*, has become frustrated with the amount of guesswork surrounding his current project. He recently took to X (formerly Twitter) to directly address the widespread speculation, and didn’t mince words.

Buckle up folks, because Camp isn’t leaving any stones unturned here, via BleedingCool.

So, here’s how I see the end of the Ultimate Universe: We never actually intended to *destroy* the universe. A big part of my work was introducing characters I wanted to continue even after I finished, and I think I made that pretty clear. But John, the previous writer, had always planned to wrap up his run at issue 24 – that was set in stone.

According to writer Phillip Kennedy Johnson, the conclusion of the X-Men series was inevitable, largely due to the creators of individual titles reaching their planned endings. He explained that both Peach Momoko and Bryan Hill had already decided to wrap up their stories around the time the ‘Maker’ storyline emerged, which makes sense given the demanding workload. Momoko, in particular, was single-handedly writing and illustrating 24 issues – a truly incredible effort – and deserved a break. While Wolverine was initially planned for 12 issues and extended to 16, other creators declined offers to continue their runs alongside the ‘Endgame’ event. Johnson himself was the only one who intended to keep writing beyond that point.

Surprisingly, the story didn’t end there. There was a plan to continue the *Ultimate Universe* with new creative teams, but Wil Moss, a senior editor at Marvel Comics, ultimately decided to halt those plans.

So, originally, the plan was for the existing comic series to wrap up as the creators moved on, and we’d keep going with *Ultimates* and launch some new titles – I was really hoping for a *Hawkeye* series, and we even talked about *Guardians of the Galaxy*. It was all pretty up in the air, though. Then, Wil Moss came to me and basically said, ‘We’re going to end everything. Just end it.’ That was a while ago – at least a year, I think, but I’d have to double-check the dates to be sure.

Regarding claims that the cancellation was politically motivated, Camp disagrees. He explains it wasn’t because the books were considered ‘too progressive’ – they didn’t change the writing itself – or due to competition from the main storyline – they still would have profited. Instead, he believes the series simply reached a natural ending point.

Consider this the final bow. While others are still trying to connect with audiences, *Ultimates* is officially ending its run.

Remaining Ultimate issues are available for pre-order now at comic bookshops.
