‘True Detective’ & ‘Lone Survivor’ Directors To Adapt ‘Cold Zero’ Action Thriller for Netflix

Nic Pizzolatto, the creator of True Detective, and Peter Berg, director of Lone Survivor, are collaborating on a new action thriller for Netflix. The film will be based on Brad Thor’s upcoming novel, Cold Zero. Pizzolatto will write the screenplay, and Berg will produce through his Film 44 production company, with Ezra Emanuel also producing.

According to Deadline, Netflix picked up the project after renewing its first-look deal with producer Berg and his studio. The upcoming film or series is based on a book described as a classic thriller in the vein of The Hunt for Red October and Ice Station Zebra, but a release date hasn’t been announced yet.

Peter Berg started his career as an actor, appearing in films like Crooked Hearts and Fire in the Sky, but he’s become much more well-known as a director. He’s directed several popular movies, including Lone Survivor, Deepwater Horizon, and Patriots Day. He also directed the film Friday Night Lights, which later became a successful TV series (and he directed some of those episodes as well). His latest project, Cold Zero, marks a return to Netflix following his work on the 2025 Western series American Primeval, which viewers really enjoyed.

Nic Pizzolatto is best known for his television work. While he’s written films like the remake of The Magnificent Seven and Deadwood: The Movie, he’s most famous for creating the crime drama True Detective. He oversaw the first three seasons of the HBO series, and then passed on the role of showrunner to Issa López for Season 4.

What Is ‘Cold Zero’ About?

The new thriller, Cold Zero, will be released on February 10th. It’s a collaboration between popular author Brad Thor and Ward Larsen, a bestselling author and Air Force veteran. Initial reviews praise the novel as another success for Thor, calling it “the perfect thriller” that’s both believable and impossible to put down. One reviewer compared it to Red Storm Rising meets The Day After Tomorrow, but even more intense. Here’s what the book is about:
