Disney’s new film, starring Jared Leto, isn’t performing as well as expected in theaters. Directed by Joachim Rønning, the movie premiered on October 10th and also features Jeff Bridges and Greta Lee. Leto plays Ares, a highly advanced digital program sent on a risky mission into the real world.
The new movie *Tron: Ares* didn’t perform as well as hoped at the box office. It brought in $14.3 million on Friday (including previews from Thursday) and a total of $33.5 million over its opening weekend – about $10 million less than predicted. With a production budget of around $180 million, the film needs to make significantly more to be profitable, potentially putting future *Tron* movies at risk. Worldwide, the film has only earned $60.5 million, with $27 million coming from international showings.
Fifteen years after *Tron: Legacy* and decades after the original *Tron* (1982), comes the newest installment, *Tron: Ares*. Early reactions from critics are mixed, with a current score on Rotten Tomatoes based on almost 180 reviews. However, audiences seem to enjoy it more, giving it an 87% rating based on over 1,000 votes. The film stars Gillian Anderson, Jodie Turner-Smith, Evan Peters, and Cameron Monaghan.
Writer Talks Tron: Ares
The project needs to be large-scale and entertaining to succeed. Approaching it in that way was surprisingly enjoyable, letting me focus heavily on developing the characters and their relationships. I knew the action sequences would likely take center stage, as is typical for these films, but I wanted to maximize the smaller, more intimate moments beforehand. Overall, it’s been a fascinating experience working on such a massive production.
Alongside *Tron: Ares*, another new film, *Roofman*, opened in theaters this weekend. The movie is a crime romance starring Channing Tatum, Kirsten Dunst, Juno Temple of *Ted Lasso*, and Peter Dinklage. *Roofman* earned $3.3 million on Friday, including $1 million from previews the day before, and ultimately brought in $8 million during its opening weekend. With a production budget of $19 million, the film has been well-received by both critics and audiences, currently holding an 85% rating from critics and an 84% audience score on Rotten Tomatoes.
Tron: Ares and Roofman are currently playing in movie theaters.
