Tron 4 Gets Major Update Following Ares’ Box Office Struggles

With poor ticket sales over the weekend, it’s possible that Disney’s Tron: Ares will be the last film in the Tron series.

Tron: Ares is a sequel to the 2010 film Tron: Legacy. It centers on Tron, a powerful program played by Jared Leto, who is sent from the digital world to the real world for a risky assignment – the first time humans meet artificial intelligence. While critics liked Ares a bit more than Legacy, it didn’t perform as well at the box office, earning $33 million domestically – $10 million less than Legacy made fifteen years prior.

Is Tron 4 happening at Disney?

With the disappointing box office performance of ‘Ares,’ Disney is unlikely to move forward with any future ‘Tron’ movies. According to The Hollywood Reporter, the studio is expected to stop making ‘Tron’ films for theaters, meaning the potential setup for ‘Tron 4’ hinted at in ‘Ares’ post-credits scene probably won’t happen anytime soon, and possibly not for another ten years.

Social media users are largely blaming Jared Leto for the film’s poor performance, noting that his previous leading role in the movie *Morbius* was also a commercial failure. A prominent talent manager told *The Hollywood Reporter* that, with actors like Michael Fassbender, Ewan McGregor, and Benedict Cumberbatch struggling to find leading roles, it’s puzzling why someone with a history of box office flops and a questionable public image would be cast in this role.

Another source close to the production disagrees that Jared Leto is responsible for the issues with *Tron: Ares*, suggesting the franchise simply isn’t popular with general audiences anymore. According to this insider, even a star like Ryan Gosling wouldn’t have saved the reboot, which no one was asking for. They believe attributing the film’s potential failure to just the casting is a mistake.

It’s unclear if Ares will be the last Tron movie. The series has a history of being revived after lengthy breaks – Ares arrived 15 years after Tron: Legacy, and Legacy itself came 28 years after the very first Tron.

You can watch Tron and Tron: Legacy on Disney+, and Tron: Ares is currently still showing in cinemas.
