The character’s portrayal often differs between the animated series and comic books, creating a challenge for toy manufacturers. However, Takara has taken a different approach with this particular Autobot figure.
Takara Tomy recently showed off the first images of their Transformers Missing Link Ironhide figure. It’s a unique take on the classic character, with a design that significantly differs from the original toy. As a figure based on the Diaclone series, it’s a departure for the Transformers line. However, the design still pays homage to Ironhide’s roots, and an updated version with a different color scheme is also planned.
Takara Switches Gears for First Look at Missing Link Ironhide

Many of the first Autobots from the original Transformers toy line weren’t entirely new designs. They were often just repainted or slightly altered versions of toys originally released as part of Takara’s Diaclone series. In Diaclone, these transforming vehicles were controlled by human-like pilots, not sentient robots. Because of this, the robot forms of toys that would become Ratchet and Ironhide originally had seats for those pilots where their heads would be.
Because the original designs were so different, Hasbro and Takara had to include face stickers. The new Transformers Missing Link Ironhide toy offers a clever solution, significantly departing from the usual standards of the toy line.
The Missing Link toy line aims to reimagine the original G1 character toys with updated articulation and detail, similar to the Transformers: Masterpiece series, while still keeping the classic look. However, the design for Ironhide largely departs from this idea. His robot mode is much more accurate to his appearance in the original cartoon, featuring a proper head instead of a seat. Notably, part of his vehicle form – a Nissan Cherry Vanette – becomes integrated into his back, unlike the original toy where it detached as a separate piece.
The rocket launcher from the original toy’s base has been reimagined as a blaster worn on the back. On the other hand, Ironhide can activate a “Respect Mode” which transforms him into a shorter, more classic robot form – complete with a windshield and a seat for a small figure. As a nod to his origins as a Diaclone toy, a female pilot figure is also included and can be seated inside.
The Transformers Missing Link Ironhide figure comes with a drill and three missiles. Interestingly, the drill is designed after a tool seen in the original three episodes of the animated series. Currently available for pre-order on Amazon Japan for about $93 or more, it’s expected to be sold in other countries through various retailers and websites. The release date is November 28, 2026, but this date is only confirmed for Japan.
Following the full reveal of the Ironhide figure, Takara also showcased Ratchet, a new version of the toy known as “Missing Link,” at a recent toy show. While it’s unclear if this toy will be released this year, the main differences will be its color scheme and a slightly altered vehicle mode – it will transform into a Nissan Vanette ambulance.
