Transformers Officially Returns a Defunct Autobot to the Spotlight in New G1-Inspired Release

Smokescreen is one of the lesser-known characters from the original “Datsun Brothers” trio in the Transformers series. However, a new Smokescreen toy is scheduled to be released in 2026.

I’m really excited about the new Smokescreen figure from Transformers: Age of the Primes! It’s designed with a look that pulls from the 2010s cartoon, but with a cool, classic Generation 1 vibe. We’re finally getting toy images, and it’s awesome to see so many different versions of Autobots from across the Transformers universe in this toy line. It’s especially cool because there’s been a lot of interest lately – both from Hasbro and other companies – in releasing different versions of the Datsun Autobots!

Smokescreen Burns Rubber in New Transformers: Age of the Primes Toy Release for 2026

The Transformers: Age of the Primes toyline draws inspiration from different versions of the Transformers story. This particular figure, Smokescreen, takes its look from the Transformers: Prime cartoon series, but transforms in a way that’s similar to the original Smokescreen from the 1980s Generation 1 series.

Many toys from the Transformers: Legacy and Transformers: Age of the Primes lines share a similar design style that recalls the original Generation 1 Transformers, even if the character didn’t appear that way in the source material. Similar to his design in Transformers: Prime, the Smokescreen figure transforms into a car inspired by, but not officially licensed from, the McLaren MP4-12C.

Smokescreen transforms with blasters that attach to his arms, similar to how weapons changed in the Transformers: Prime series. These blasters also function as exhaust pipes when he’s in vehicle mode, and he has a Phase Shifter built into one arm. As a Deluxe Class figure, Smokescreen is priced around $27.99 and should be available in stores between January and June of 2026.

Despite being called Smokescreen, his original animated design shared colors with Prowl, another character from the first generation of Transformers. Later versions of Smokescreen featured different colors, inspired by the original toy molds of the ‘Datsun Brothers’ – figures that existed before they were reimagined as Transformers.
