The third season of Tracker has brought significant changes to the show, and some viewers feel these changes aren’t an improvement. The series stars Justin Hartley as Colter Shaw, an expert in survival who finds missing persons for rewards. Tracker is based on the Colter Shaw book series by Jeffery Deaver, specifically The Never Game, and while the TV show has evolved, it still draws inspiration from the original novels.
Colter usually works alone or with the police, but he does have a small team assisting him. In the first season of Tracker, his team included the tech expert Bobby Exley, and Shaw’s contacts, Velma and Teddi Bruin. However, by the beginning of Season 3, none of those original team members remain, as the actors who played them have left the show. While Tracker quickly adds new helpers, these changes unfortunately make the show less compelling.
Who Is Mel in Tracker Season 3, Explained
Season 3 of Tracker continues to feature Colter’s team members Reenie Green (Fiona Rene), who has been with the show since the beginning, and Randy (Chris Lee), Bobby’s cousin who joined in Season 2 when Exley was temporarily away. The team expands in Season 3 with the addition of Melanie, or “Mel” (Cassady McClincy Zhang), who Reenie hires to assist at her law firm, replacing Velma.
Reenie subtly suggested she needed assistance during the premiere, mentioning to a busy Randy that she had resumes to go through. Randy offered to help by reviewing the applicants, and later, in Episode 3, he thought a candidate named Green would work well with Mel, a young character who admires Reenie. Although Mel focuses more on Reenie’s legal cases than Colter’s work, the show will likely delve into Mel’s mother’s murder at some point.
In Season 3, Episode 3 of Tracker, when Reenie officially brings Mel onto the team, we start to see how Colter’s new group will function. Although Mel wasn’t initially hired for Colter’s bounty hunter work, Reenie and Randy quickly involve her in their current case. Seeing how enthusiastic Mel is, it won’t be long before she’s fully working alongside the rest of the team, potentially bringing a fresh perspective and unique skills to their investigations.
Tracker Replaced Velma and Teddi Bruin From Tracker Seasons 1 & 2
The new characters on Tracker each bring something unique to the show. Generally, Randy will be taking over Bobby’s job as Colter’s tech expert and source of information, and Mel will be assisting Reenie at her law office, similar to how Velma used to. However, Mel won’t be fully replacing Velma; it seems Reenie will now be the one assigning Colter his cases. Still, Mel effectively fills the roles previously held by both Velma and Teddi, who were originally Colter’s handlers when the series began.
The characters Teddi and Velma were inspired by a couple, Teddy and Velma, from a book series. In the books, they handled Colter’s affairs and watched his house while he traveled in a Winnebago. Although the show Tracker later changed Colter’s living situation to an Airstream trailer and removed his fixed home base – aside from his childhood home and Reenie’s office – the first season kept Teddi and Velma’s original roles. This simple setup, taken from the source material, gave Tracker a distinctive quality, making it stand out.
Although Velma and Teddi had a connection on the show, it didn’t last long. Actress Weigert left Tracker after its first season. When the show returned, Velma told Reenie that Teddi was with her mother and they’d broken up because their relationship was causing problems. Later, after McEnany’s departure, Reenie explained to Randy that she tried to reconcile with Teddi, successfully repairing their relationship but effectively disbanding the original team.
Velma’s Tracker Replacement Trades Off Some of the Show’s Charm
While Mel is a good addition, the new version of the show loses some of the special connection Velma and Teddi had. Their age difference and unique personalities, especially showcased while living and working from their home in Northern Florida, are missed. Viewers fondly remember their life with their pets and playful arguments with Colter over video chat – moments often shared while enjoying everyday activities like cooking or having a glass of wine.
Teddi and Velma had a particularly close relationship with Colter, acting as parental figures since his own parents, Mary Dove and Ashton, were often preoccupied with their own issues. Unlike most people, the Bruins weren’t overly impressed by Colter’s abilities, which helped ground his heroic persona and make the show more relatable. Their presence made the series unique; without them, it felt more like a standard police procedural, with Reenie, Randy, and Mel handling cases from Green’s Denver office.
