The season 3 finale of ‘Tracker’ brought a significant chapter to a close while also setting the stage for what’s next. Jensen Ackles and Justin Hartley reunited for the last two episodes, where Russell and Colter finally discovered the truth behind their father’s death. Staying true to their nature, the brothers then vowed to locate a young man who was kidnapped years ago as part of a program their father worked on for DARPA. Though their relationship was strained by the revelations, fans were treated to a surprising twist: Colter has been living a double life all along.
During the final moments of the season 3 finale, Colter drove his truck and Airstream trailer to a secluded spot that felt like a personal retreat. The building was more of a stylish workshop than a traditional house, but it clearly held personal meaning for him. While it’s unknown where this place is located or how often Colter visits, it was well-maintained and even had a fully stocked refrigerator.
I was really intrigued when Colter told Keaton he’d brought Ashton Shaw’s old truck to a place he keeps completely secret – apparently, nobody who’s been there has ever talked about it! It’s clear he’s hiding something major from Reenie, Randy, and Russell, and it makes you wonder what exactly happened on that property. We’re going to have to wait until season 4 of Tracker to find out any details, and depending on how CBS schedules things for fall 2026, Colter’s whole story might shift in a big way.
Tracker Needed A Change After Colter’s Main Mystery Was Solved
The show Tracker didn’t unnecessarily prolong the central mystery. Over time, Colter and Russell gradually learned about their father’s work in Alaska, and the finale confirmed their mother hadn’t asked Otto to kill Ashton. Ultimately, Colter came to believe his father was fundamentally a good man, despite his flaws.
Ending the Vancouver storyline of Tracker felt good, but the season finale also hinted at what’s coming in season four. What happens next with Russell’s betrayal of Colter likely depends on whether Jensen Ackles can return for a guest appearance. We don’t yet know when Colter will discover that Ashton supposedly did something terrible to him – something Russell was willing to sacrifice everything to hide. Russell didn’t share all the details with Reenie, and Colter is accustomed to his brother disappearing for extended periods.
The biggest surprise in the season 3 finale – one that worked even with Jared Padalecki’s schedule – was the discovery of Colter’s hidden base. While it’s a place only he and now Keaton know about, this secret location gives Tracker the chance to introduce new characters and explore different facets of Colter’s personality, like his ability to keep secrets from even those closest to him. Now, fans likely have a better idea of what Colter does with the money he earns from tracking down bounties.
It’s unusual for a show to make big changes after just three seasons of success, particularly since Tracker is already shifting its production to Los Angeles, which will naturally alter how the show is made. However, Justin Hartley’s willingness to refresh the series before it becomes repetitive is a good sign for its future. Hartley has assured fans that season four will still follow Colter’s adventures, so it won’t feel like a completely new show.
Jensen Ackles’ Supernatural Show Proved This Twist Works
Interestingly, Hartley doesn’t need to look far for proof that a surprising season finale can revitalize a show that’s become predictable. Jensen Ackles, famous for playing Dean Winchester for 15 seasons on Supernatural alongside Jared Padalecki, experienced this firsthand. For much of the series, the Winchester brothers drove across America, stayed in budget hotels, argued with each other, and hunted monsters and demons.
After nearly ten years of hunting monsters and demons while constantly traveling, Supernatural revitalized itself in season eight with the introduction of the Men of Letters’ bunker. While the backstory explaining how they found it was a bit complicated, the bunker finally gave the Winchester brothers a stable home base. This change proved successful, allowing the show to continue for another seven seasons.
Throughout its episodes featuring Jared Padalecki (playing Russell), Tracker has playfully included references to Supernatural. The season 3 finale, in particular, strongly resembled an episode of the original CW series. While Tracker is currently more successful on CBS than Supernatural ever was, these nods are enjoyable for fans. Giving Colter a stable home life in the finale is one such example, and this development could potentially extend Tracker‘s run on television.
