James Tolkan, a well-known actor in film and television, died on March 26, 2026, at the age of 94. According to a family spokesperson, he passed away at his home in Saranac Lake, New York. The cause of death has not been disclosed, as reported by The Hollywood Reporter.
Tolkan began his acting career in 1960, appearing in episodes of television shows like Naked City and Armstrong Circle Theatre. He went on to play larger roles in popular films such as Serpico, The Amityville Horror, and Abduction in the 1970s, but it was in the 1980s that he really became well-known for his film work.
In 1983, Tolkan appeared alongside major stars in the popular thriller WarGames. The film was a huge success, earning almost $125 million worldwide on a modest $12 million budget. He played Mr. Wigan in the movie, which also featured Matthew Broderick (known for Ferris Bueller’s Day Off) and Ally Sheedy (The Breakfast Club). WarGames ranked among the year’s top five highest-grossing films in the US, following blockbusters like Trading Places, Flashdance, Tootsie, and Star Wars: Episode VI – Return of the Jedi.
Two years after starting his career, James Tolkan achieved his biggest role yet as Principal Strickland in Back to the Future. Strickland was the stern principal of Hill Valley High School in both 1985 and 1955, constantly scolding Marty McFly and his father, George, for what he saw as their lack of effort. He strongly disliked “slackers,” particularly the McFlys, and uniquely, he didn’t appear to age between the two time periods. Tolkan reprised his role as Strickland in the sequels, Back to the Future II (1989) and Back to the Future III (1990).

I always forget how much he’s in Top Gun! It was a huge year for him after Back to the Future, and he played this really authoritative Naval officer – they called him Stinger. He’s the one who sends Maverick and Goose to Top Gun at the very beginning of the movie. And I love that he shows up again at the end, laughing with Maverick after that risky mission – especially when Maverick jokes about becoming an instructor. It’s a small part, but he really stands out!
Everyone at MovieWeb is deeply saddened by the passing of James Tolkan and extends heartfelt sympathy to his family, friends, and all who knew him.
