Science fiction is an incredibly diverse TV genre, offering endless possibilities for settings and worlds. However, surprisingly few of these fictional places seem like places people would actually want to live. Many popular sci-fi shows feature huge, destructive wars between planets, and even the more realistic or cheaper ones often take place in bleak, oppressive futures.
While many sci-fi TV shows feature thrilling settings, they aren’t always places you’d want to actually live. Sci-fi has the power to create stunning and immersive worlds, and though we often get brief looks at these incredible places in popular franchises, they don’t usually linger for very long.
The Desert
Love, Death + Robots
Netflix’s Love, Death + Robots is a fantastic and daring series, offering viewers a fresh, new world with each episode. While “Fish Night” might not be the strongest episode overall, it creates the most appealing and immersive world—as long as you follow the local guidelines.
I just finished watching “Fish Night,” and it’s really stuck with me. It’s about these two salesmen who get completely lost in the desert, and things get weird when night falls. Basically, the spirits of sea creatures – like, actual ghosts of fish and things – start appearing! The younger salesman gets totally captivated and, incredibly, decides to go for a swim… right into the mouth of something dangerous. It’s crazy to think that if they’d just stayed with the car and watched, it would have been an amazing experience, but instead… well, you have to see it!
Eureka
Eureka
Unlike most serious science fiction shows, Eureka is known for its humorous mishaps, making it a fun choice for fans of quirky sci-fi. The show centers around the secret town of Eureka, populated by brilliant scientists, where each episode features a technological error or accident. Life in Eureka is exciting and unpredictable, but generally not too dangerous.
Many science fiction shows use accidents as the start of world-ending events. But Eureka is different – it’s a more cheerful show where episodes often feature time travel and robots. If the town of Eureka actually existed, it would probably be a really exciting place to live, with almost no boring days and lots of helpful people always ready to fix whatever goes wrong.
Patience
Resident Alien
Patience, Colorado, is a beautiful, secluded town offering winter fun, good food, and a friendly local bar. The only catch? Its doctor is a little strange. The show Resident Alien features Alan Tudyk in a standout performance as an alien who takes the form of the town doctor and gets caught up in a murder mystery.
It’s common for science fiction shows set on Earth to portray humans negatively reacting to aliens. But the town of Patience was different. Even when they thought Harry was just a person, the residents were surprisingly accepting of his odd behavior. And remarkably, even after learning he was an alien, many became his friends and supporters, creating a genuinely welcoming atmosphere in the town.
Delvia
Farscape
Delvia is a fascinating planet in the show Farscape, inhabited by a unique species of plant-based humanoids. We’re introduced to it through the character Pa’u Zotoh Zhaan, who went from being a rebel to a priestess. Although we don’t see much of Delvia itself, the show portrays its society as peaceful and inspired by Buddhist principles.
The people of Delvia, featured in Farscape, prioritize spiritual growth, meditation, and community, with one exception being the backstory of the character Zhaan. Despite their peaceful nature, the Delvians are far from defenseless. When an opponent underestimates Zhaan by calling her weak, she famously replies, “soft, yes. Weak, no“. This combination of peaceful values and self-defense makes Delvia an appealing setting in the sci-fi world.
Serenity
Firefly
Most science fiction spaceships are depicted as incredibly advanced and complex, almost like floating cities with living quarters for the crew. However, the ship Serenity, from the show Firefly, feels different – it’s surprisingly cozy. This warmth isn’t limited to the main living areas; every crew member has made their own personal touch to the entire ship, from the engine room to the cockpit.
Although the characters in Firefly travel to different planets, the spaceship Serenity is where they always come home. The show is remembered as a brilliant, though short-lived, science fiction series, largely due to its wonderful cast and the strong, family-like bond they shared. Firefly made viewers truly feel like they wanted to join the crew and live aboard Serenity.
Gallifrey
Doctor Who
Gallifrey, the home world of the Time Lords in Doctor Who, is one of the most iconic planets in science fiction. It’s such a fan-favorite location that the show repeatedly brings it back, even after it’s been destroyed, ensuring it remains a key part of the series’ history. Gallifrey is known for its stunning beauty and unique environment.
Gallifrey is a truly unique planet. Although we haven’t seen much of it in Doctor Who, it’s known to be full of life, with vibrant plants and animals. The planet is warm and orange, featuring silver trees and a diverse range of creatures. With its powerful defenses and ability to heal, Gallifrey seems like a fascinating world to inhabit and discover.
Las Vistas
Kipo And The Age Of Wonderbeasts
Following a global event that transformed animals into human-like creatures, they rebelled against humanity, leaving Los Angeles in ruins. Now known as Las Vistas, the city is home to these new creatures, called “wonder beasts” or “mutes,” and serves as the backdrop for Kipo and the Age of Wonderbeasts. Though this transformed world can be perilous, it’s also full of excitement and adventure.
Imagine a world filled with quirky animal groups – raccoons obsessed with exercise, cats who are lumberjacks, and even frogs running a mafia! While not all of these groups in Kipo are immediately welcoming to humans, the show is ultimately about them learning to cooperate and build a better world for everyone, making it a place you’d actually want to live in.
San Junipero
Black Mirror
The Black Mirror episode “San Junipero” is notable for its surprisingly cheerful conclusion. It tells the story of a love between two women who connect while trying out a virtual reality experience that simulates a digital afterlife. In this program, called San Junipero, people can live forever as their younger selves in a beautiful resort town.
San Junipero isn’t meant for everyone, but it’s understandable why Yorkie was drawn to it, considering she lost the ability to use her body when she was alive. The thought of living in a perfect, invulnerable body and experiencing the happiest moments of your life again is very attractive, and unlike most episodes of Black Mirror, “San Junipero” didn’t have a bleak or disturbing ending.
The Federation
Star Trek
The United Federation of Planets from Star Trek is often considered one of the most utopian societies ever depicted in science fiction television. In this future, everyone’s basic needs are met because money doesn’t exist. Advanced technology called replicators can create almost anything, eliminating both extreme wealth and poverty – there are no billionaires or people struggling to survive.
The Federation, as depicted in Star Trek, champions equality for all life forms, ensuring fair treatment and legal rights for everyone. This commitment addresses many of the problems we face today. Star Trek‘s vision of the Federation offers a hopeful and forward-thinking world where everyone, regardless of gender, race, or physical ability, can thrive.
