Tom Selleck has addressed speculation about whether his character from Blue Bloods might appear in the spin-off, Boston Blue. Selleck played Frank Reagan, the New York City Police Commissioner, throughout all 14 seasons of the original series.
When news of the new show broke, fans of Blue Bloods quickly started speculating about which characters might make an appearance. Many viewers hoped to see Tom Selleck reprise his role as Danny Reagan’s (Donnie Wahlberg) father.
In a recent interview with Hour Detroit, the actor suggested a return to the role is unlikely. He explained that he doesn’t feel obligated to continue playing Frank Reagan after finishing his time on Blue Bloods. He stated, “I’m not sure about Boston Blue – that would be a different show.” He added, “I believe my purpose is to ensure Blue Bloods is remembered as a significant show, but I don’t think it’s my responsibility to keep playing Frank Reagan.”
Tom Selleck was upset that CBS canceled Blue Bloods in 2024, and he still doesn’t understand the decision given the show’s popularity. He compared the cancellation to taking football off the air, explaining, “It was a huge disappointment, and I still don’t know why CBS did it. We were the sixth most popular show on television!”
Selleck had previously expressed his sadness about the show ending. He told TV Insider that he was still processing the cancellation and felt the network hadn’t appreciated the show’s consistent success. He explained, “The show was always taken for granted because it performed well right away, so it’s going to take me a long time to come to terms with it.”
New episodes of Boston Blue air Fridays at 10 PM Eastern and 7 PM Pacific time on CBS. You can also watch all episodes on demand by streaming them on Paramount+.
All seasons of Blue Bloods are also available to stream on Paramount+.
