The new film Marty Supreme is breaking box office records. Directed by Josh Safdie and starring Timothée Chalamet, the ping pong drama is expanding nationwide on Christmas Day. Critics are loving it, giving the movie a 95% ‘Certified Fresh’ rating on Rotten Tomatoes.
According to Deadline, Marty Supreme is expected to make $875,000 from just six theaters over its opening weekend. The film sold out over 90 showings and averaged $145,900 per theater.
Not only did the film surpass Wes Anderson’s The Phoenician Scheme (which averaged $95,000 per theater when it first released), but it also achieved the highest per-screen average of any A24 film ever. Previously, Uncut Gems held that record with an average of $107,448 per screen.
The opening weekend for Marty Supreme was remarkably successful, achieving the 15th highest per-screen average of any film ever. This puts it in the company of major hits like La La Land ($176,220), Frozen ($243,390), Toy Story 2 ($300,163), and the 1994 release of The Lion King ($793,376).
As a huge movie fan, I’ve really noticed how consistently A24 delivers big openings. It’s amazing – nineteen of their films are actually in the Top 200 of all time when you look at how much money they made per theater on opening weekend! And with Marty Supreme joining the list, that means six of their movies are now in the absolute Top 50. I was curious, so I looked into where all those films rank and how well they did globally – here’s a breakdown of what I found.
| Rank | Title | Debut PSA | Worldwide Box Office |
|---|---|---|---|
| #15 | Marty Supreme (2025) | $145,900 | TBD |
| #26 | Uncut Gems (2019) | $107,448 | $50 million |
| #33 | Moonlight (2016) | $100,518 | $65.1 million |
