Timothee Chalamet Confirms Dune Part 3 Time Jump

Viewers might be surprised to see the characters in the upcoming film are more mature than anticipated, even those who have read the Dune books. While Timothée Chalamet is currently promoting his new movie, Marty Supreme, he recently shared some insights about the sequel. He explained that his character, Paul Atreides, will be noticeably different when the film begins, having aged and evolved since the first installment.

Timothée Chalamet explained on The Graham Norton Show that his character will age significantly, portraying someone 15 to 20 years older than himself.

Fans of Dune Messiah, the novel inspiring Dune: Part Three, will remember it takes place twelve years after the first Dune book – which also formed the basis for Dune and Dune: Part Two. It appears director Denis Villeneuve is planning an even longer time jump, although Timothée Chalamet may have been speculating when he mentioned the timeframe.

This suggests the movie starts further into the story’s timeline than the original book or source material did.

Dune: Part Three Takes Place Many Years After Dune: Part Two

With Dune: Part Three, director Denis Villeneuve plans to conclude his work on the Dune series, completing his adaptation of the first two Dune books.

Director Denis Villeneuve previously told Vanity Fair that he always envisioned his Dune films as a two-part adaptation of the first book, and that part is now complete. He also hinted at a solution for handling the significant time jump that occurs between the first and second books, saying, ‘I know how to do that,’ but didn’t reveal specifics.

Following the original Dune and its sequel, Frank Herbert wrote four additional Dune Chronicles books, but many fans feel they’re quite different in style and quality. Beyond those, numerous Dune prequels have been published since Herbert’s passing. Despite this, rumors suggest Warner Bros. and Legendary are considering further films, possibly with Gareth Edwards (director of Rogue One: A Star Wars Story) replacing Denis Villeneuve. However, no official plans for future movies have been announced yet.

Denis Villeneuve is back to direct Dune: Part Three, again collaborating with Jon Spaihts on the screenplay. The film will feature Timothée Chalamet, Zendaya, Florence Pugh, Jason Momoa, Josh Brolin, Rebecca Ferguson, and Anya Taylor-Joy, all returning from the previous Dune films. Robert Pattinson is also joining the cast, though his role is currently a secret, sparking speculation about who he will play.

The third Dune movie is set to be released in theaters on December 18, 2026. You can currently watch the first two Dune films, Dune and Dune: Part Two, on HBO Max.
