There’s growing curiosity regarding the backstory of Bob and Sentry in the Thunderbolts, as it appears they were influenced by Valentina’s program, which involved memory loss and control. However, specifics are still vague, raising questions about the extent of their relationship.
Bob and Sentry’s original connection to Valentina in Thunderbolts*
As a fan, I’ve learned that before joining Valentina’s program, Bob was part of a special task force. However, due to the powerful drugs he was given, he lost his memory. Later, Valentina revealed to him that in his previous life, he had been a killer for the U.S. More drugs were used to bring out this hidden aspect of his past, which she could then leverage for her own purposes. This information underscores how skillfully Valentina manipulated Bob’s past to further her plans.
Through interviews and scripts connected to Thunderbolts, it was revealed that screenwriter Eric Pearson had made significant alterations in the initial cut. He was surprised to find Taskmaster firing the shot, an action not present in his early drafts. In those drafts, Antonia Dreykov/Taskmaster played a larger role and shared a subplot with Ava/Ghost. Both characters were lab-raised, with Ava acting as a mentor guiding her counterpart to assert her individuality. This theme of memory problems was consistent among Valentina’s recruits.
Pearson mentioned that Taskmaster’s impaired memory affected how she interacted: ‘Comically, she was grappling with her own memory loss, and there was a joke about her repeatedly restarting the fight, not remembering that they had reconciled and became allies.’
In a similar vein, Daniel Richtman described that Antonia struggles with memory issues, as her mind was injured and then reconstructed. Consequently, she relies on reminders to help her stay organized. Through this mutual aid, Antonia and Ava cultivate a strong bond of friendship.
Apart from being controlled by Valentina, Richtman additionally disclosed Ava’s significant role beyond just her duties. In essence, Ava cares for Bill Foster (portrayed by Laurence Fishburne), who is battling cancer. Moreover, she forms a strong bond with Taskmaster due to their shared traumatic experiences. While delving into the Thunderbolts* plotline, director Jake Schreier noted these entwined narratives as an integral aspect of Valentina’s character development strategy throughout the film.
This reveals that Bob and Sentry are connected to Valentina via manipulation, memory erasure, and enlisting them into her project together with Taskmaster and Ghost.
