In a recent interview, director Jake Schreier shared that he originally intended an alternate end-credits scene for his Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) project, featuring David Harbour as the Red Guardian. This scene, different from the two thrilling post-credit scenes shown in Thunderbolts, didn’t make it to the final cut.
Jake Schreier reveals alternate Thunderbolts* post-credits scene with Red Guardian
When I recently chatted with Josh Wilding from ComicBookMovie.com, I shared that I had thoughtfully prepared an amusing post-credits scene for Thunderbolts*, which would have reminisced on a humorous tale from Florence Pugh’s character, Yelena Belova’s past.
As a movie enthusiast, I must say that Alexei Shostakov’s comedic performance, portrayed by Harbour, is simply delightful. He’s the kind of character you could envision endless post-credits scenes for. In fact, I had an idea for a unique Thunderbolts post-credits scene featuring Alexei. Picture this: A VHS home video of a chaotic soccer game with Mindy, showcasing Alexei’s antics as they bounce back and forth in time. It could be quite amusing, but it’s just one of the ideas we considered; ultimately, we decided on something else.
In Schreier’s sequence, we learn about an event from Yelena’s past that she shared during the group’s flight from Valentina Allegra de Fontaine’s hidden bunker. As a child, Yelena was part of a soccer team, the West Chesapeake Valley Thunderbolts, coached by her adoptive father, Alexei Shostakov. This team had an unusual record – they never won a single game. The team also included a girl named Mindy, who once had an embarrassing incident during a match when she needed to use the restroom in the middle of the field.
In contrast, the initial post-credit sequences of Thunderbolt featured David Harbour’s character, Red Guardian, persuading a shopper to purchase a Wheaties box adorned with him and his teammates. Simultaneously, the second credit scene hinted at the introduction of the Fantastic Four in the MCU, effectively paving the way for Avengers: Doomsday’s events.
