Warning: Contains spoilers for Thrash!
Netflix’s new shark thriller, Thrash, could become a franchise. The ending resolves the main story while hinting at potential sequels. The film centers around Hurricane Henry, a powerful Category 5 storm that slams into Annieville, South Carolina, destroying the town and unleashing sharks into the floodwaters.
The film Thrash tells two separate but parallel stories. One follows Lisa Fields and Dakota Edwards as they struggle to survive, and are eventually rescued by Dakota’s uncle, Dale, a shark expert. The other focuses on three foster siblings – Dee, Ron, and Will – and their fight for survival inside their own house.
As the movie Thrash builds to its peak, the characters find themselves in desperate situations, all trying to survive a storm filled with sharks. Lisa goes into labor, while Dakota risks her life to find a boat for herself and Lisa. Dale embarks on one last trip to Annieville. Meanwhile, the siblings try to escape their house, but things get even more complicated when they discover their foster father, Mr. Olsen (Matt Nable), actually survived a previous shark attack.
The waters are teeming with dangerous sharks, including bull sharks and a pregnant great white named Nancy, keeping the threat consistently high. The film doesn’t offer much resolution as it ends, clearly hinting at a follow-up movie that Netflix and Sony Pictures could make.
Who Dies & Who Survives Thrash’s Ending
Despite the dangerous shark-infested waters in Thrash, the film actually doesn’t feature many deaths. The most significant injury happens to Mr. Olsen, whose unexpected reappearance shocks Dee, Ron, and Will. He’s badly hurt, having lost a hand and part of his rear from a previous encounter with bull sharks while attempting to escape.
Dee and Ron caused Mr. Olsen’s death. He’d told his foster children to save him, but when he tried to hit Ron, Ron stopped him. Dee then kicked him in the face, causing him to fall from the counter into the water. A bull shark was quickly attracted by the commotion and his injuries, and finished him off. This allowed Ron to go to the basement to gather supplies for their escape.
Most of the human deaths in Thrash happen before the final scenes. The only creatures who die during the climax are bull sharks. The siblings manage to kill two of them by attaching dynamite to steaks. Dakota shoots one to protect Lisa, and Nancy actually eats the same shark that previously attacked Lisa after she gave birth—the same one she’d already stabbed with a piece of wood.
In the end, things turn out well for the main characters of Thrash. Dakota, Lisa, and Lisa’s baby are saved by Dale and Brian (Chai Hansen), along with Joe Sprinkle (Andrew Lees) and the cameraman, Doug (Sami Afuni), who were all on the boat. Dee, Ron, and Will also manage to escape the house after successfully dealing with all the dangers they faced.
Why The Great White Shark Saved Dakota & Lisa
Honestly, one of the biggest surprises for me in Thrash was the ending. You expect Dakota and Lisa to pull off some last-minute rescue, or maybe even Dale, but nope! It’s the great white shark that actually saves the day. It just leaps out of the water and takes care of the bull shark that was attacking them – totally unexpected, and kind of brilliant!
As a shark enthusiast, I thought the scene where the great white attacked the bull shark felt really realistic! It makes sense because great whites are at the top of the food chain, and bull sharks are a bit lower down. Apparently, sharks like Nancy actually do eat bull sharks when they get the chance. And honestly, after Dale stunned all the other bull sharks with his electric attack, it was pretty easy for the great white to grab a quick meal from the confused ones!
The film Thrash shows that bull sharks are often afraid of great white sharks, largely because great whites are one of the few animals capable of killing them. This dynamic is flipped at the end of Thrash, where the great white shark is portrayed as a hero – a departure from typical ‘killer shark’ movies where they are the villains.
How Thrash’s Ending Sets Up A Sequel
The film Thrash unexpectedly revisits its hopeful conclusion with a last, unsettling scene. We see harbor master Greg Wilson (Adam Dunn) back at his computer following Hurricane Henry. As warning sirens blare, Greg removes his glasses, shocked to discover another Category 5 hurricane is headed for the Atlantic coast.
Hurricane Jon, now a powerful Category 5 storm, feels like the beginning of another disaster – a sequel to the recent devastation. Those who survived the first hurricane might believe they’ve dodged a bullet, but they could be facing another catastrophic storm very soon.
Alongside the arrival of Hurricane Jon, the ending of Thrash hints at a possible change of scenery. Dee, Ron, and Will mention considering Florida as a safer place to live. While Hurricane Jon might prevent them from reaching Florida, the story could expand beyond the South Carolina town as the survivors from the first movie look for a safe haven.
Is Thrash 2 Confirmed?
The movie Thrash ends with a hint at a sequel, which has led many to believe a second film is in the works. However, neither Netflix nor Sony Pictures has confirmed any plans to continue the story. While a sequel isn’t impossible, it’s not currently being developed following the release of Thrash on Netflix.
Whether or not we get a Thrash 2 really depends on how well this new movie does. Netflix will be watching closely to see how many people watch it, especially since the first Thrash got mixed reviews. They need to see strong viewership numbers before deciding if it’s worth making a sequel.
If Thrash is as successful as Under Paris was for the streamer, a sequel will likely be announced soon. Director Wirkola seems eager to explore this story further.
If a sequel to Thrash is made, many of the original actors could return. Alternatively, the story could continue as an anthology series, focusing on new characters each season as they try to survive the dangerous storms, instead of revisiting the same people’s struggles.
Whether there will be a sequel to Thrash, and details like the cast, storyline, and release date, are still uncertain. The first movie’s ending strongly suggests a follow-up, so it remains to be seen if Thrash will become a major series for Netflix.
