Thor’s Daughter is Way More Important to the MCU Than Fans Realize

I was so relieved to hear Chris Hemsworth say they aren’t planning to retire Thor anytime soon! It’s been a bit of a rollercoaster with the character’s movies. We all loved Thor: Ragnarok – it was a real high point for the MCU. But Thor: Love and Thunder… well, it didn’t quite land, did it? It felt all over the place, and apparently, a lot of that was because they were making things up as they went along. Even people who worked on the movie have admitted it wasn’t their best work, which is a little sad, but good to know they’re aware.

One advantage of the massive Marvel Cinematic Universe is that even a less-successful movie can still contribute to the overall story. Love and Thunder was important for building out the universe’s mythology, going beyond just introducing new gods. As the current saga nears its end, viewers will likely need to revisit the groundwork laid in Phase Four of the MCU, including a key character from Love and Thunder: Thor’s adopted daughter, Love, played by Chris Hemsworth’s daughter, India.

Love and Thunder’s Mightiest Character Gave His Power to Thor’s Daughter

The character Love wasn’t created for the comics, but she’s expected to play an important role in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Hints suggest she was captured by Doctor Doom. Introduced in Love and Thunder, Love is Gorr the God Butcher’s biological daughter. The gods’ lack of concern when she died drove Gorr to seek revenge and attempt to kill all gods.

It broke my heart to learn about Gorr and his daughter, but it was incredible to discover he was able to bring her back to life, even if it cost him his own. And what a resurrection it was! She wasn’t just alive again, she was… changed. She had powers, real superpowers, and when she looked at her reflection in the waters of Eternity, it wasn’t her face staring back, but a swirling galaxy, a miniature version of Eternity himself. It was breathtaking, and Thor stepped in to care for her, which I thought was a beautiful thing.

In the Marvel comics, Eternity has a counterpart named Infinity, who represents space while Eternity embodies time. It appears Love, the entity, may now be filling the role of Infinity in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Although a statue of Infinity appeared in Love and Thunder before Love’s return, abstract concepts like these don’t always follow a strict timeline. Regardless, Love clearly has gained some of Eternity’s power, and this will likely lead to significant events down the line.

Love and Thunder’s Lore Ties Into the Larger Storyline of the MCU

Eternity is likely the most powerful being in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, so introducing him was a big decision for Disney. Even though Taika Waititi wrote and directed Love and Thunder, he still had to consider the overall story of the MCU. The fact that Thor’s child is directly connected to such a powerful cosmic entity suggests that Love will play an important role in future Marvel films.

Love’s introduction to the Marvel Cinematic Universe could explain several ongoing mysteries. If she’s truly a universal consciousness similar to Infinity, she might be key to Doctor Doom’s plans in the next Avengers movies. There’s also a possible link to the Quantum Bands seen in Ms. Marvel and The Marvels; the Quasar comics established that those bands get their energy from Infinity.

Many viewers have found the Multiverse Saga to feel disorganized and lacking a clear focus, particularly when compared to the more cohesive Infinity Saga. Unlike the Infinity Saga, it didn’t have major Avengers movies to define its phases, and several storylines were introduced but never resolved. The planned focus on Kang the Conqueror as the overarching villain also had to be changed unexpectedly. Despite these issues, the Multiverse Saga was important for building the future of the Marvel Cinematic Universe, laying the groundwork for what’s to come.

Even movies I didn’t love, like Love and Thunder, might end up feeling more important when we see what’s coming next. I think the upcoming releases of Doomsday and others have the potential to tie everything together from the last seven years of Marvel movies, making it all feel like one big, connected story. It’s cool to think that Love’s powers, given to her by Eternity, will be super important not just for finishing up the Multiverse Saga, but for what comes after, too.
