A compelling legal drama, now streaming on Paramount+, has redefined how shows are revived. With growing nostalgia, Hollywood is increasingly relying on familiar stories. Over the past few years, studios have been revisiting popular older titles, either by continuing the original narrative with a sequel or completely reimagining it for a new audience.
It’s been wonderful to see classic stories updated for today’s viewers, but reimagining them is surprisingly difficult. Most reboots or revivals don’t become huge successes, and even fewer manage to maintain that success long-term, as we saw with the end of the 2023 Night Court run on network television. However, one show has consistently excelled at this trend since 2024, and it’s continuing to do so in the 2025-2026 television season.
How Kathy Bates’ Matlock Rewrote The Rules Of Reboots & Revivals
When I first heard CBS was bringing back Matlock, it was a real mixed bag of reactions. A lot of us who grew up loving the original were excited about the idea, but others were worried a reboot just wouldn’t work – or that it didn’t even need to happen. Honestly, the new Matlock really surprised me. It wasn’t just trying to trade on the name; they took the show in a fresh direction, and it totally won over the skeptics – including me. It proved this wasn’t just a cash grab, but a genuinely good show.
The new Matlock series starring Kathy Bates isn’t a remake or continuation of the original. Instead, it’s heavily inspired by Andy Griffith’s portrayal of the character. In the show, Bates and her grandson develop a plan to get revenge on a law firm that deliberately concealed crucial documents, leading to preventable harm. Although she takes the name ‘Matlock,’ Bates’ character isn’t connected to the original Ben Matlock; she adopts the name as part of an elaborate disguise.
The new Matlock series, created by Jennie Snyder Urman for CBS, isn’t a complete restart or continuation of the original, but it does follow the same weekly legal case format. Each week, Madeline and her team work on different cases, letting her use her underestimated persona to her advantage, which makes solving them all the more rewarding.
Bates’ Matlock Continues To Get Better After The Initial Twist
What makes the 2024 version of Matlock stand out isn’t just its intriguing initial idea. Many shows with similar twists quickly lose momentum, but Matlock skillfully maintains the central mystery throughout the series. Madeline’s attempts to hide her secret create compelling tension and drive the plot forward. The show also features well-developed supporting characters; the storylines for Skye P. Marshall and Jason Ritter are particularly strong, making them integral to the series’ success.
I’ve always loved how Matlock kept things interesting week after week when it originally aired on CBS. It really blended a compelling season-long story with the familiar structure of a legal procedural, and it worked so well. Honestly, starting it now on Paramount+ is a smart move, especially knowing CBS has already renewed it through season three. It’s a great way to catch up before even more episodes drop!
