As a horror fan, I’m telling you, 2025 was the year. We had everything – big, Oscar-worthy blockbusters and incredible indie films that everyone was talking about. While movies like Sinners and Weapons are probably what people will remember most, it was actually smaller films like Companion, Clown In A Cornfield, and Heart Eyes that really kicked things off and set the stage for an amazing spring and summer at the movies.
As a horror fan, I’m already getting excited for 2026! January is shaping up to be incredible with movies like We Bury the Dead, Primate, 28 Years Later: The Bone Temple, and especially Sam Raimi’s new film, Send Help. While Send Help might be the one that really breaks out, so far none of these January releases seem destined to be huge box office hits, but I’m still counting on a strong start to the year!
Things might shift in February with the release of a new horror film that looks like it could become a big success, similar to those anticipated for early 2025. 20th Century Fox is releasing Psycho Killer on February 20th, and it has the potential to be a surprise box office hit that really starts the momentum for horror films in 2026.
Psycho Killer Has All The Ingredients For A Surprise Hit
The first trailer for Psycho Killer is a compelling and unsettling preview of a potentially fantastic serial killer film. Unlike recent movies like Longlegs or The Black Phone, it doesn’t rely on a famous actor to draw viewers in. Instead, the film seems to build suspense through a combination of elements, and could become a surprise success if people start talking about it.
The film features Georgina Campbell, an actress rapidly gaining prominence in the horror genre. She’s best known for her role in Barbarian, and Psycho Killer seems to be aiming for a similar level of shocking impact. Campbell’s experience in several other horror and thriller films makes her a perfect choice for this movie. Veteran actor Malcolm McDowell (known for A Clockwork Orange and Halloween) will also appear, though his role is currently being kept secret.
The screenplay for Psycho Killer was penned by Andrew Kevin Walker, a highly respected writer known for his work on iconic films like Se7en, 8mm, and Sleepy Hollow. He also recently wrote The Killer, a 2023 film directed by David Fincher. With such a strong background in horror, thrillers, and stories about serial killers, Walker’s involvement is sure to pique the interest of movie fans.
The story becomes even more compelling when you understand the plot. Psycho Killer centers around a police officer, Campbell, whose husband is murdered before her eyes, launching her on a quest for revenge. She quickly discovers the killer isn’t just a murderer, but a cruel and evil serial killer with much bigger, terrifying plans. This is a thrilling idea, and with Walker directing, it promises to be a truly exciting film.
Psycho Killer Looks Like Early Evidence Of Another Strong Year For Horror
Psycho Killer is just one of many horror movies expected to come out in 2026. While it will be challenging to follow a strong year for the genre in 2025, several big sequels – including Scream 7, Ready or Not: Here I Come, Scary Movie 6, and Evil Dead Burn – will likely compete for audiences’ attention.
Like recent surprise hits such as Barbarian, Longlegs, and Weapons, Psycho Killer has the potential to be a major success. The film’s strong creative team and promising first trailer suggest it could be one of the standout horror movies of 2026.
