People usually prefer either fantasy or science fiction. It’s easy to see why – monsters seem less scary when you can fight them with lasers and lightsabers. However, the Final Fantasy series consistently breaks this mold, smoothly blending both fantasy and sci-fi elements together.
From the very beginning, the original Final Fantasy featured heroes discovering the remains of advanced, lost societies, and they may have even faced the dangerous Warmech. While other games touched on similar themes, Final Fantasy 8 balanced this blend of magic and technology particularly well, despite being overshadowed by another popular game.
Final Fantasy 8 Perfectly Merges Sci-Fi and Fantasy
While Final Fantasy 7 is arguably the most well-known game in the series, its blend of fantasy and science fiction feels somewhat uneven. The game creates a believable world at first, but this quickly falls apart. As soon as you leave the futuristic city of Midgar and travel a short distance to the peaceful village of Kalm, the sense of a unified world is lost.
Despite some initial criticism, the story does a better job of clarifying its unique mix of fantasy and science fiction. It’s set in a world slowly rebuilding after a massive war between highly advanced civilizations that used both magic and technology. While you’ll find remnants of both technology and magic—especially in the Garden military academies—most places have a modern look and feel.
The story blends elements from different genres, featuring a powerful sorceress from the future who uses magic and takes control of people in the past. Her goal is to control time and ultimately become all-powerful.
Playing Final Fantasy 8 on newer computers and consoles used to be difficult. But in 2019, Square Enix released a remastered version with updated graphics and quality-of-life improvements, making it easy for anyone to enjoy the game today.
Will a Future Final Fantasy 8 Remake Change the Setting?
After finishing the Final Fantasy 7 Remake project, Square Enix will probably start working on a modern remake of Final Fantasy 8. Similar to the Final Fantasy 7 Remake, this new version will likely be released as a series of games, which allows the developers to expand on the original story and add new content.
Even though a Final Fantasy 8 Remake probably won’t drastically alter the main story – meaning popular fan theories like Squall being dead or Rinoa being Ultimecia likely won’t come true – there’s still a lot of room to add more depth. The original game didn’t reveal much about the Sorceresses, particularly Adel, and offered very little to explore in Ultimecia’s time period when players arrived.
Final Fantasy VIII is a game that fans either love or hate, but it has a compelling story and a unique world. If Square Enix were to remake it, they could really expand on the blend of fantasy and science fiction, and the game’s already impressive settings would look stunning with modern graphics.
While a remake might not happen for a while, Final Fantasy 8 is still a great game to play today. It successfully blends science fiction and fantasy, creating a truly captivating world.
