Founded in 1963, this team has gone through many changes, but one lineup stands out as significantly more powerful than any other. While often called Earth’s Mightiest Heroes, some versions of the team have definitely been stronger than others.
The original Avengers team included Iron Man, Hulk, Thor, Ant-Man, and Wasp. They first teamed up to stop Loki, Thor’s brother. Later, Iron Man and a new group of heroes formed the most recent Avengers team over 50 years later, starting with *Avengers* Vol. 5 #1.
The Avengers World Team Is The Most Powerful Avengers Team Ever Assembled
The team assembled in *Avengers* Vol. 5 came together before the major *Secret Wars* storyline, which the Marvel Cinematic Universe will soon be adapting. Following a division, Hickman’s Avengers fractured into several groups: the New Avengers, a team dealing with multiversal issues, and another Avengers squad officially supported by SHIELD and led by Steve Rogers. This SHIELD-backed team clashes with Tony Stark and his secret group, the Illuminati, who are determined to stop dangerous dimensional collisions at any cost. Simultaneously, Sunspot takes charge of the New Avengers, sending the strongest heroes from the global Avengers team to confront a hidden danger across the multiverse.
Avengers World Team’s Powers Explained
The Avengers World team has a significant power imbalance between its members, although its strongest heroes are incredibly powerful. When working together, they’re nearly unbeatable. However, they aren’t used often, only being deployed when absolutely necessary. Internal conflicts also cause problems, like the fallout after Captain America learned about Iron Man’s involvement with the Illuminati, which led to Iron Man being removed from the team.

The Avengers World team includes some incredibly powerful members, proven by their ability to fight the nearly all-powerful Beyonders, even when split into a Multiversal Avengers team. During this conflict, Ex Nihilo and Abyss used their unique creation powers – gifts from the Builders – to turn one of their own into a tree, a sacrifice that cost them their lives. Star Brand was also killed, but his death caused a huge explosion that destroyed another Beyonder. Finally, Thor and Hyperion, both god-like beings, fought bravely and perished battling a massive army of Beyonders.
Pod defeated a powerful group of Avengers, including Captain America, Spider-Man, and Wolverine, before becoming one of them. Captain Universe is incredibly powerful, controlling the Builders and their creations like Ex Nihilo, Abyss, Pod, and Nightmask. Ex Nihilo’s species can not only create life – as they once did by killing a Beyonder – but also destroy planets, turning them into lifeless wastelands known as Plague Planets.
Captain Marvel and Hulk are well-known Avengers with incredible strength and a long history of amazing accomplishments. Adding these two powerhouses to any team immediately makes it one of the strongest in the Marvel Universe. With Hyperion – Marvel’s version of Superman – joining them, the Avengers World team becomes exceptionally powerful, arguably the most powerful Avengers team of all.
How Hickman’s Avengers Compare To Other Avengers Teams
Despite having a large team with several incredibly powerful members, the Avengers World still lacks some key players. For instance, Sentry, a formidable member of Norman Osborn’s Dark Avengers, is powerful enough to challenge even strong heroes like Hyperion. Similarly, the Dark Avengers boast Ares, the God of War, who is a match for Thor’s immense power.
Honestly, I’m a little bummed that Doctor Strange and Scarlet Witch aren’t in the current Avengers lineup. They’re usually mainstays, you know? Like, Strange was part of an *amazing* Avengers team with Captain Marvel, Ghost Rider, and She-Hulk back in Jason Aaron’s run. And Scarlet Witch? She teamed up with Vision – another powerhouse – in some really classic Avengers stories, like the ones Roger Stern wrote. It just feels off without them, to be real.
Even with these incredibly strong heroes, the Avengers World team is still much larger and more adaptable than any previous Avengers lineup. It was deliberately built to handle any threat, from Earth-based dangers to cosmic and even multiversal crises. While some might say the Avengers World team is too powerful compared to older teams, it’s important to remember they were assembled *before* the devastating events of the 2015 *Secret Wars*, which brought the entire Marvel universe – and all its strongest heroes – to the brink of destruction.
The Avengers World Roster’s Legacy
As a huge Marvel fan, I was so excited when I heard about *Secret Wars*! It was going to shake everything up by basically restarting the whole multiverse. The idea was to merge the main Marvel universe (Earth-616) with the Ultimates universe, creating one big, new world. It was a little sad to hear the Avengers World Avengers wouldn’t be coming back after that, though they definitely set an incredibly high standard for any team to follow. But the new team that stepped up to the plate was amazing – the Ultimates! They were seriously powerful, with heroes like Captain Marvel, Spectrum, Black Panther, Ms. America, and Blue Marvel all on one team.
The Avengers, even with their world-spanning efforts, demonstrated that some dangers are insurmountable. Although they successfully defended against massive threats like Thanos and the Builders simultaneously, they couldn’t prevent the events that led to Secret Wars. Even their strongest heroes were outmatched by the immense power of the Beyonders, though they did manage to defeat a few of them.
The large team size of the Avengers World led to internal divisions, a problem the X-Men also know well – Cyclops, for example, formed a separate team after a major falling out with Wolverine. Similarly, the Avengers World fractured when Steve Rogers lost trust in Tony Stark due to his secret plan to prevent incursions. This ultimately resulted in a three-way fight between Rogers’ Avengers, Sunspot’s New Avengers, and Stark’s Illuminati.
The *Hickman’s Avengers* comic series marked a major change for the character Sunspot in Marvel. Throughout the series, Sunspot evolved significantly, eventually leading a new version of the New Avengers and taking control of AIM. He then completely reformed AIM, transforming it from a villainous group into an organization dedicated to helping people worldwide.
