Be warned, the following contains spoilers for the TV show Sons of Anarchy. Recently, it was revealed that Ryan Hurst, known for playing Thor in God of War Ragnarok, will be playing Kratos in the upcoming God of War series on Prime Video. This might be surprising for those familiar with Hurst only as Thor, particularly if they haven’t seen what he looks like without the character’s makeup and costume. However, his natural appearance makes him a perfect fit for the role of Kratos.
Before being cast, many wouldn’t have immediately thought of him for the role of Kratos in God of War, especially since he’s known for playing Thor. But looking at his past work, it’s clear why Prime Video saw his potential – he’s consistently portrayed characters with a quiet intensity and simmering anger. And, let’s be honest, his impressive height and beard probably didn’t hurt! If you haven’t already, it’s worth checking out Ryan Hurst in FX’s Sons of Anarchy – it’s a great showcase of his talent and will give you a good idea of what to expect when he plays Kratos in God of War.
Sons of Anarchy is One of TV’s Best, Most Unassuming Dramas
Ryan Hurst is known for his role as Harry ‘Opie’ Winston in the intense drama Sons of Anarchy, which centers around a motorcycle club in Charming, California (SAMCRO). While Jackson ‘Jax’ Teller is the main character, Opie’s story foreshadows Jax’s potential fate. Opie struggles with whether to fully embrace his family’s legacy within the club or to escape and build a peaceful life with his love, Tara Knowles, and his character highlights the difficult choices Jax faces.
Opie experiences immense tragedy when his wife is mistakenly murdered by a club member, orchestrated by Jax’s stepfather and the club president who wrongly believed Opie was an informant. This loss deeply affects him, straining his relationships as a husband and father. Ultimately, Season 5 ends with Opie’s shocking and selfless sacrifice, an act of unwavering loyalty that also conveniently provided a narrative resolution for his character within Sons of Anarchy.
Sons of Anarchy’s Ryan Hurst is a Great Choice for Kratos
While the ways their past traumas show up are different, both Kratos and Opie are adult men struggling to manage their anger and keep emotional distance, particularly from their kids. Ryan Hurst, the actor playing Kratos in the upcoming Prime Video God of War series, could draw a lot of inspiration from his portrayal of Opie, but it remains to be seen how the character will develop.
