The initial trailer for Spider-Man: Brand New Day showed off a lot of villains, but some longtime comic readers had to do a double-take to remember a few of them. Characters like Tarantula and Boomerang aren’t particularly well-known to most viewers, and they tend to disappear from storylines for long periods, sometimes never returning.
It’s not only villains who get lost to time. Over the years, Spider-Man has seen many supporting characters, allies, and even past love interests fade into the background. When some of these forgotten faces reappear in stories set earlier in Spider-Man’s history, it mostly highlights how long it’s been since they mattered to the main story.
Debra Whitman Hasn’t Appeared Since She Sold Out Spider-Man
Hobie Brown’s Evolution Into Hornet Never Caught Any Steam
Hobie Brown, who would later become known as the Spider-Man villain the Prowler, initially appeared as a character in a comic book before his main debut. He originally used his technical skills to commit robberies while wearing a costume, but a confrontation with Spider-Man led him to change his ways.
Prowler and Spider-Man became close friends, and Hobie Brown even worked at Parker Industries, both as Prowler and sometimes filling in for Spider-Man. Later, Miles Morales’ uncle, Aaron Davis, began using the Prowler identity in both timelines – the original and the current one.
During the King in Black storyline, Hobie Brown briefly appeared as a hero while wearing the Hornet armor he’d originally designed for Spider-Man. However, that promising start didn’t last, and since then, Hobie Brown has only been seen as his Spider-Punk animated version.
Jessica Carradine Was the Daughter of Uncle Ben’s Murderer
When Ben Reilly became the new Spider-Man in New York City, he surrounded himself with a new group of friends and acquaintances. Many of them worked with him at the coffee shop where he was employed, including Jessica Carradine. She initially seemed supportive, but Ben soon discovered she actually strongly disliked Spider-Man.
Reilly eventually learned the shocking truth: Jessica’s father was the man who killed Uncle Ben. He had deceived Jessica about his role in Ben Parker’s death. After he died during a confrontation with Spider-Man, Jessica wrongly held Spider-Man responsible.
Jessica quickly discovered that Ben Reilly was Spider-Man, but she chose to protect his secret and move on. Her arrival was a significant event in the beginning of Ben Reilly’s time as Spider-Man, and her abrupt exit continues to feel like a missed opportunity for further storytelling.
Dr. Elias Wirtham’s Shocking Alter Ego Cardiac Has Been Silent
Elias Wertham became a doctor after his brother tragically died from a disease he couldn’t be cured of, dedicating his life to helping others. He not only invented important medical tools and earned patents, but also became successful financially. Later, he discovered a cure for the disease that took his brother’s life had existed for years, but a company deliberately withheld it to maximize profits.
Wirtham rebuilt some of his technology and then, in a daring experiment, replaced his own heart with an energy-based device, transforming himself into Cardiac. As the costumed vigilante Cardiac, he was known for his harsh tactics, but he only went after companies that exploited the ill and vulnerable. This complex approach often put him at odds with, and yet alongside, Spider-Man.
Cardiac is a more interesting villain than many of Spider-Man’s typical enemies. Sadly, he hasn’t appeared often in comics since his initial run, aside from a story arc in Superior Spider-Man and a recent cameo in a Venom series set in the 1990s. However, an upcoming team-up between Superman and Spider-Man could bring Cardiac back into the spotlight.
Doppelganger is a ’90s Villain Who Can’t Seem to Stay Dead
As a huge Marvel fan, I always found the idea of the Doppelgangers fascinating – these dark, warped versions of our favorite heroes created to take them down. Most of them didn’t last long, thankfully, but Spider-Man’s Doppelganger was different. It actually became a pretty significant character, showing up in a lot of storylines. We even thought it was gone for good during the Maximum Carnage event, but true to form with comics, it somehow managed to come back years later! It’s just a testament to how compelling that twisted version of Spidey was.
This monster has repeatedly reappeared even after seemingly being destroyed, but lately it’s been absent, as if imprisoned and left behind. The story definitely echoes earlier themes, and fans are hoping to see this creature make a comeback.
Andrew Maguire Was Spider-Man’s Short-Lived Sidekick Alpha
Today, Spider-Man is famous for leading a team of heroes, but he wasn’t always a team leader. For a long time, he worked alone, patrolling the streets. So, when it was announced he would finally have a sidekick, it was a major event. This happened during a period in the comics called “Big Time,” where writer Dan Slott had Peter Parker making significant advancements in science while working at Horizon Labs.
Okay, so the movie kicks off with this scientist, Peter, making a huge discovery – the Parker Particle. It’s a game-changer, but also seriously unstable. This leads to a young student, Andrew Maguire – a clear nod to the actors Tobey Maguire and Andrew Garfield who’ve both played Spider-Man – getting hit with some cosmic energy. He ends up with incredible powers and decides to go by the name Alpha. It’s a pretty interesting setup, hinting at a potentially complex origin story.
Despite Spider-Man’s efforts to train him, Alpha was still impulsive and often put himself and others at risk. He eventually lost his powers, though he later got some back and decided to become a hero independently. After that, he largely disappeared, making only brief appearances now and then. Although his story had potential, it’s generally considered to have been overpromoted, and most fans haven’t really noticed his absence.
F.A.C.A.D.E. Was Part of a Larger Mystery That Was Abandoned
The Spider-Man comics have explored many mysteries over time, from figuring out who was really behind the Hobgoblin’s mask to uncovering the story of Peter Parker’s parents and their secret work. In the 1990s, writers tried a new approach, introducing a powerful, armored villain called F.A.C.A.D.E. as the center of a new puzzle.
The Full Acclimation Combat And Defense Explo-skeleton, known as F.A.C.A.D.E., was stolen during its very first public appearance. The person piloting it killed both its creator and a photographer from the Daily Bugle. Shortly after this incident, the events of the Clone Saga began, and F.A.C.A.D.E. was largely forgotten, only reappearing briefly some years later.
Spider-Man ran into F.A.C.A.D.E. during a hectic day, and F.A.C.A.D.E. was about to finally reveal who he was, solving a mystery that had lingered for decades. But Spider-Man was in a hurry and interrupted him before the truth could be told – and surprisingly, no one really seemed interested. The mystery surrounding F.A.C.A.D.E. has become a running joke, and fans aren’t asking for this character from the ’90s to come back.
Regent Threatened More Than One Reality Before Disappearing
Over the years, there have been many different versions of Spider-Man, but only a handful have truly excited fans with fresh ideas. One particularly interesting version first showed up during the Secret Wars storyline, which also introduced the Renew Your Vows Spider-Family.
Steel Spider Hasn’t Returned Since He Faced the Thunderbolts
Ollie Osnick initially debuted as Kid Ock, a character who built his own mechanical arms. Although his early fans weren’t quite on the right track, he soon became inspired by Spider-Man and changed his creations to reflect that.
Osnick came back as Spider-Kid and briefly teamed up with a group called the Misfits, but he didn’t stay with them for long. Later, while in college, he returned as the Steel Spider – with a new and improved suit – to rescue his girlfriend. He wasn’t finished with being a hero just yet.
Steel Spider briefly retired, but was compelled to fight again during the Civil War. When he refused to register as a superhero, Norman Osborn’s Thunderbolts attacked him, inflicting severe injuries and then imprisoning him in the Negative Zone, where he remained lost to the world.
Spider-Queen Could Return in the Comics or on the Big Screen
Okay, so I just watched the trailer for Spider-Man: Brand New Day, and while it showed off a bunch of cool new villains, it definitely felt like they were hiding a few surprises. The biggest thing, though, was this tease of Spider-Man changing – like, completely transforming inside a web cocoon and apparently getting organic web-shooters! As a long-time comic book reader, I know he’s gone through variations of this before, most notably during…
This isn’t the first time something like this has happened to Spider-Man. He previously encountered Adriana Soria, the Spider-Queen, who transformed him into a giant spider and ultimately led to him gaining new powers. She also teamed up with the villain known as The Jackal.
Although it seemed like she died, The Jackal actually made a clone of her, so she could reappear at any time. With rumors circulating about a possible return in Brand New Day, it looks like she might be coming back soon.
