The Wheel of Time’s Rosamund Pike Still Hopes a New Streamer Will Save the Show

It’s a fantastic time to be a TV viewer – streaming services offer so much variety, with everything from short, self-contained shows to series that run for many seasons. But it’s also incredibly frustrating, because even well-loved shows are often canceled, and many critically acclaimed series are left without a renewal.

Fans were surprised when The Wheel of Time was canceled. The fantasy series, adapted from the books by Robert Jordan and Brandon Sanderson, launched in 2021 and, after a slow start, gained popularity with its third season. Recently, Rosamund Pike, a lead actress on the show, shared that she’s hoping another streaming service will revive it.

Rosamund Pike was a standout in the series, portraying Moiraine Damodred, a powerful member of a magical order searching for the prophesied Dragon Reborn. Pike recognized the show faced challenges, including delays during its first season caused by the COVID-19 pandemic, but noted that the quality steadily increased over the subsequent seasons.

Pike began by saying that many viewers didn’t enjoy the first season, and he tended to agree. They faced significant challenges during filming, including COVID outbreaks and changes in key crew members.

Initially, it took some time to find our footing, but by the second season, we really hit our stride and delivered a much improved show. By Season 3, we were confident in our vision and created a compelling, well-written series with strong performances that even attracted well-known actors to take on smaller roles.

The Gone Girl actress added that she believes they demonstrated their abilities with the film.

The actress admitted she often wonders if the show would have fared better if it had premiered under different circumstances, potentially avoiding cancellation. She believes they may have been caught up in the industry’s constant push for new content, where shows are quickly replaced just to appear fresh and innovative. It’s a cycle where audiences are always looking for ‘what’s next.’

She’s holding out hope that another studio will recognize the show’s potential and continue it. She believes the current team is incredibly talented and capable of creating several more fantastic seasons. She also shared that she and the cast have become very close, and they still regularly stay in touch and enjoy spending time together.

I was a big fan of her work, especially how she brought The Wheel of Time to life through the audiobooks. I remember her saying something that really stuck with me – she felt like they’d done everything they could with the series, and while she wasn’t ruling anything out, she seemed to think it was time to move on. It felt like a bittersweet acceptance that this chapter was closing.

The Wheel of Time Received a Petition to Save the Show

The cancellation of the show this spring surprised many viewers, particularly considering how much better it had become. Over its three seasons, the fantasy series earned strong reviews, with critics giving it an 88% approval rating and audiences scoring it 75%. The third season was the most popular yet, achieving a near-perfect 97% rating from critics and an 85% audience score – the highest of the entire series.

As soon as news of the cancellation broke, fans of The Wheel of Time started a petition hoping to find a new home for the series. They highlighted that the most recent season had better ratings on sites like Rotten Tomatoes, IMDb, and Metascore – even compared to other popular, ongoing shows such as Netflix’s The Witcher, Amazon’s Rings of Power, and HBO’s House of the Dragon. Despite this improvement, no other streaming services have stepped in to continue the show.

The Wheel of Time is streaming on Prime Video.
