The movie ‘The Surfer’ begins with a man, known only as the Surfer (played by Cage), returning to his hometown to reconnect with his son (Little) and share his past. But when he arrives, he finds a tight-knit group of surfers, led by Scally (McMahon), who are wary of newcomers.

When he challenges those causing problems, he finds the authorities aren’t on his side and actually begin to investigate him. But he’s hiding something significant, and pushes things to the limit in order to get rid of the people disturbing the peace on the beach.

Verdict on The Surfer

Recap

I just watched this movie about a guy who moves back to his hometown, hoping to buy a place near this awesome surf break. But things get complicated fast! There’s this local gang of surfers who are super territorial and don’t want anyone new around. They really make his life difficult, but it’s cool seeing him get ready to finally stand up to them and take back control of the area.

Best Parts

The film effectively portrays a man’s rapid descent into chaos and his inability to cope. Nicolas Cage delivers a compelling performance, drawing the viewer into the character’s increasingly desperate situation. The movie also does a good job of establishing the power dynamics of a gang and their unwillingness to accept outsiders.

Worst Parts

The movie fails to clearly explain the gang’s actions or their reasons for doing what they do. It hints at some explanations, but ultimately leaves viewers with more questions than answers.

Final ThoughtsThe Surfer sends us down a strange and unusual journey.
