James Gunn began creating a world based on DC Comics characters. Now, director Craig Gillespie’s new film seems to be building on that foundation, developing it into a larger, interconnected universe.
The official trailer for this summer’s Supergirl series is now available. While a previous teaser used the upbeat song “Call Me” by Blondie, the full trailer features the more emotional track “What Becomes of the Brokenhearted” by Jimmy Ruffin, highlighting the sadness of Kara Zor-El. The trailer leaves viewers wondering what has caused Milly Alcock’s character, a Kryptonian with superpowers, to feel so heartbroken.
Because is dying, and she has only three days to save him. Watch for yourself:
Fans familiar with Tom King’s excellent graphic novel, Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow – which served as the basis for this Supergirl script by Ana Nogueira – won’t be surprised by this powerful emotional moment. I’m glad it’s included in the trailer, because it shows that director Billy Gillespie and Nogueira intend to stay true to King’s story, which was nominated for a Hugo Award.
The story follows Kara Zor-El (Milly Alcock) as she joins forces with a young orphan named Ruthye (Eve Ridley) to track down Krem of the Yellow Hills (Matthias Schoenaerts). Both Kara and Ruthye are driven by a desire for revenge, but they’re also in a desperate race against the clock. Supergirl learns she has only three days to find an antidote, or she will lose her beloved Krypto forever.
‘The Ditz From That Dive Bar’
The new Supergirl film, directed by Craig Gillespie, isn’t a direct copy of the Tom King story. King’s version unfolds in stages, with Kara and Ruthye traveling across the galaxy to assist different alien groups before facing Krem. Also, this trailer for the movie features several elements not found in the original book.
Most notably, the debut of one-time Aquaman Jason Momoa in : Lobo the bounty hunter.
It’s surprising to see Lobo featured in multiple scenes, even two full action sequences. Since the character isn’t from the original book, the filmmakers Gillespie and Nogueira have a lot of creative freedom with him. And once you’ve got Momoa in the Lobo makeup, you definitely want to showcase him as much as possible. This makes you wonder if they’re planning a future Lobo movie, or if he might show up in other projects.
We briefly see Superman (David Corenswet) in a video message, where he checks in on Supergirl as she leaves Earth. This moment highlights that Supergirl is part of the larger DC Universe James Gunn is building, and that universe will expand later this year with Lanterns.
I wasn’t the only one who noticed the similarity between Milly Alcock saying “I have no people” and Michael Shannon’s General Zod in Man of Steel, was I?
Just me?
This summer, the DC Universe is growing with the release of Supergirl in theaters on June 26th. The film stars Milly Alcock as the titular character, alongside Eve Ridley, Jason Momoa, Matthias Schoenaerts, Emily Beecham, and David Corenswet.
