The Super Mario Movies Have Barely Touched This 3-Part Series: Why It May Be Next

Following the success of The Super Mario Galaxy Movie, Nintendo might adapt another set of classic Mario games from the early 1990s for the big screen. While the sequel to The Super Mario Bros. Movie doesn’t directly hint at its plot, there are enough clues to suggest possible directions for the next film.

With a history stretching back over 40 years, Mario has had countless adventures, and there’s plenty of potential for more if he, Luigi, Peach, Toad, and Yoshi team up for another film. So far, Nintendo and Illumination have brought elements from various Mario games to life in two movies.

As a huge cinema fan, I’ve noticed films like Super Mario Galaxy, Super Mario Bros. 2, Super Mario World 2: Yoshi’s Island, and Super Mario Odyssey have already gotten their due on the big screen. But honestly, Mario’s been in so many adventures over the years, there’s still a ton of material they could draw from for a third movie. It’s exciting to think about what they’ll choose!

There are so many Mario games that could be adapted into a movie! I’d love to see something based on Super Mario RPG: Legend of the Seven Stars or even Super Mario Bros. 3. It sounds like, just like The Super Mario Bros. Movie, they’re thinking about pulling inspiration from lots of different games. But what the main story will be about? That’s still a mystery, and I’m excited to find out!

The Super Mario Land Trilogy Explained

Following Bowser’s defeat in Super Mario Bros. 3, Nintendo launched a new series of Mario games with Super Mario Land. Released in 1989, this game took a fresh approach by moving the action from the familiar Mushroom Kingdom to Sarasaland, the home country of Princess Daisy.

Mario journeys across the four kingdoms of Sarasaland to save Princess Daisy from the alien Tatanga, who has kidnapped her. This game marked Princess Daisy’s first appearance in any Super Mario game.

As a huge fan of the original Super Mario Land, I was thrilled to jump back into the series with Super Mario Land 2: 6 Golden Coins. It feels good to be back in the classic Mushroom Kingdom, and the story cleverly builds on what happened in the first game. Basically, while I was busy saving Princess Daisy in Sarasaland from Tatanga, the Mushroom Kingdom was left vulnerable. That’s when this new, incredibly greedy bad guy named Wario saw his chance to invade and cause trouble!

This means Mario is back on an adventure through the Mushroom Kingdom, determined to overthrow Wario, who has taken the throne. Adding to the challenge, Tatanga returns as one of the bosses Mario must defeat before he can face Wario.

Following Mario’s defeat of Wario, the series took an unexpected turn, making the former villain the hero. Wario Land: Super Mario Land 3 begins with Wario upset about losing his castle, so he sets out to earn money to buy a new one. He plans to do this by stealing treasure from pirates, who are led by the game’s villain, Captain Syrup.

Why Super Mario Land Would Make Sense As a Follow-Up To The Super Mario Galaxy

It would make perfect sense if The Super Mario Galaxy Movie set up the story for a future film based on Super Mario Land. Introducing Princess Daisy after the credits could have been a hint that’s exactly what they plan to do.

Ultimately, her most significant contribution to the Mario universe is still Super Mario Land, and she’s absolutely essential for any potential Super Mario Land movie adaptation.

Bowser has already been the hero’s opponent in two movies, and the latest film suggests he might not be used as a major villain again. Therefore, a third movie will likely need to introduce new enemies to take his place.

I really think Wario would be a great addition to the Mario movies! There was so much talk about him showing up in the first one, it feels like he’s definitely on their radar. And if they do decide to make him the bad guy, I’d love to see them draw inspiration from Super Mario Land 2 – that’s where his whole rivalry with Mario really kicked off, and it’d be a perfect starting point for his story.

Tatanga would also be a great choice. He’d work well as a supporting villain, much like Wart in The Super Mario Galaxy Movie. Both Tatanga and Wart are classic Mario enemies who were only the main boss in one game.

I’m really hoping we see Super Mario Land adapted next, and it makes a lot of sense to me. The movies have already pulled inspiration from so many games we love – Yoshi’s Island, New Super Mario Bros., and others. But Super Mario Land has only gotten a few musical nods so far, though the introduction of Daisy definitely feels like a hint that they’re setting things up for it!

The game seems to be steering clear of elements from the Super Mario Land series, possibly because it’s holding those characters, references, and story ideas for a future installment. With Daisy appearing after the credits, it looks like that future might be coming soon.

How A Super Mario Land Movie Could Work

The Super Mario Land games together offer a solid foundation for a longer, more complete story. Instead of focusing on just one game, the story could draw elements from two or all three. This would work especially well if both Tatanga and Wario were featured as villains. Captain Syrup could also be included as a third character, perhaps chasing after Wario.

Similar to how The Super Mario Galaxy Movie separated the main characters, a story based on Super Mario Land could send some heroes to assist Princess Daisy in rescuing Sarasaland. At the same time, Wario—possibly working secretly with Tatanga—could take over the Mushroom Kingdom, ultimately requiring all the heroes to join forces in a grand showdown.
