Everyone is eagerly awaiting The Super Mario Galaxy Movie, which is expected to be a big hit when it comes out in 2026. As a video game adaptation, it has strong potential for financial success, and fans like me are excited to see Illumination bring the beloved Nintendo Wii games to life. We’re especially thrilled at the news, revealed in a recent leak, that Yoshi will be appearing in the movie for the first time!
It wasn’t a shock to see Yoshi coming – the end of The Super Mario Bros. Movie showed his egg hatching, so we knew he’d appear in a sequel. Now, a leaked image from a Pillsbury cookie box has given us our first glimpse of Yoshi’s design, and I really like the slightly updated look.

Yoshi Will Apparently Look A Bit Different For The Super Mario Galaxy Movie
Yoshi appeared on packaging for The Super Mario Galaxy Movie, and while he generally looks the same, his eyes are noticeably different. In the video games, Yoshi has blue eyes with a black center, which is unusual. The movie version swaps these colors, giving him a black center within a blue eye, making his eyes look more like Mario’s. This change is a good one and helps Yoshi stand out more clearly.

Illumination Has Previously Tweaked The Look Of Classic Nintendo Characters
It’s a bit like what Illumination did when redesigning characters from Nintendo games. They didn’t make huge changes – the characters still look pretty close to their more recent versions. Looking back at the first movie, I think Cranky and Donkey Kong had the most noticeable updates, with more defined features around their faces.
Why I’m Over The Moon That The Next Super Mario Movie Is Going To Center Around Super Mario Galaxy
Yoshi’s eyes have been subtly updated, and it makes me wonder if the designers aimed to make them look more like Mario’s. Considering Yoshi is meant to be Mario’s close companion – almost like a pet – it’s not unusual for companions to share similar features. Though, if that’s the idea, Yoshi could really use a mustache!
With a new Mario movie planned for 2026, Nintendo is also starting work on a Legend of Zelda film. There’s talk of eventually creating a Super Smash Bros. movie that could include characters from all Nintendo franchises, but that’s likely a long way off. I’m really looking forward to seeing how Nintendo brings its other beloved characters to life on the big screen and what creative choices they make.
As a huge movie fan – and a gamer! – I’m already marking my calendar for April 3rd, 2026, when The Super Mario Galaxy Movie hits theaters. It’s awesome to see so many video game adaptations being made, and I’m definitely going to keep an eye out for what other gamer-inspired films are on the horizon.
