The Super Mario Galaxy Movie is powering up its runtime.
Following the success of The Super Mario Bros. Movie, Mario, Luigi, and Princess Peach are embarking on a new adventure that takes them outside the familiar Mushroom Kingdom and into space. This larger story introduces new characters, both good and bad, and as a result, the movie is a bit longer than the first one.
Based on listings from AMC Theaters and Fandango, The Super Mario Bros. Movie sequel will be approximately 1 hour and 38 minutes long. That makes it six minutes longer than the first film from 2023 and the second-longest Super Mario movie ever made, only shorter than the 1993 live-action film (which was 1 hour and 44 minutes). It’s also one of the longest movies from Illumination, with a similar length to Despicable Me 2 and the Sing films.
Despite earning over $1.3 billion worldwide, The Super Mario Bros. Movie received a mixed response. While audiences praised its beautiful visuals and nods to the classic games, some critics found problems with the story and how quickly it moved.
While the 2023 Super Mario Bros. Movie was a good length for kids and kept things moving, some critics and viewers thought it felt a little shallow and hurried, preventing a more thorough exploration of the characters. Despite this, the movie proved popular with audiences, earning a 95% approval rating on Rotten Tomatoes, significantly higher than the 59% score from critics.
| Every Super Mario Bros. Movie | Runtime |
|---|---|
| Super Mario Bros.: The Great Mission to Rescue Princess Peach! (1986) | 61 minutes |
| Super Mario Bros. (1993) | 104 minutes |
| The Super Mario Bros. Movie (2023) | 92 minutes |
| The Super Mario Galaxy Movie (2026) | 98 minutes |
The upcoming Super Mario Galaxy Movie is expected to be longer than the first film, which might come as a surprise. This is likely due to the introduction of several new key characters and locations. Trailers have already showcased characters like Rosalina (played by Brie Larson), Bowser Jr. (Benny Safdie), Birdo, and Yoshi – the last of whom was teased at the end of The Super Mario Bros. Movie.
Even with several trailers released for The Super Mario Galaxy Movie, most plot details remain under wraps, except for the fact that the story will involve expansive worlds, new characters, and a confrontation with Bowser Jr. Rumors have surfaced suggesting Wario might actually be the main villain, but neither Universal Pictures nor the filmmakers have confirmed these leaks.
With the movie premiering in less than a month, we’ll probably start seeing early reactions soon, but full reviews won’t be available until closer to the release date. Hopefully, these initial reactions will give us an idea of whether the Super Mario sequel has improved its script and if its shorter length works well.
The Super Mario Bros. Movie boasts a fantastic voice cast including Chris Pratt, Anya Taylor-Joy, Charlie Day, Jack Black, and Keegan-Michael Key. Aaron Horvath and Michael Jelenic directed the film, with Matthew Fogel writing the screenplay. The actor voicing Yoshi hasn’t been announced yet.
The Super Mario Galaxy Movie will release in theaters on April 1, 2026.
