With The Super Mario Galaxy Movie now released, despite some criticisms, it really succeeds in giving each character a chance to stand out. This is particularly true for Princess Peach and Rosalina, both important figures in the Mario universe, who have just had their backstories officially linked in a significant way.
The movie surprised audiences by revealing that Princess Peach and Rosalina are long-lost sisters. When united, they possess immense power over the universe and life itself. While a fun twist, this change to established backstory – or ‘retcon’ – has proven controversial among fans, with some accepting it and others disagreeing. Despite the debate, the new lore actually builds on Rosalina’s character and fits well within the movie’s story.
The Super Mario Galaxy Movie Proves Peach and Rosalina Work as Sisters
The movies only hint that Princess Peach was lost as a baby. While it’s easy to think she originally came from Mario’s world, a story Rosalina tells in The Super Mario Galaxy Movie reveals a connection between the two princesses. This connection becomes clearer as the story unfolds, establishing a narrative link between them.
Rosalina is the elder sister, and both she and her sibling are made of stardust. When they touch, they have the amazing ability to create life. Together, they’re incredibly powerful, and Rosalina also shows off her strength using a wand. Her position as the older sister keeps her origins a secret until her family history is revealed.
The idea of Rosalina and Peach being sisters actually fits the story well and doesn’t detract from their characters. The main problem for fans, though, is that Rosalina doesn’t have a significant role and is primarily portrayed as someone who needs rescuing. This doesn’t fully showcase her potential, but their sisterly connection still opens up interesting story possibilities. The biggest missed opportunity is simply that we don’t see enough of them interacting together in the movie.
The Super Mario Galaxy Movie Retcon Ties Heavily Into an Early Game Idea
Rosalina’s journey begins when a small, star-like creature called a Luma discovers her aboard an ancient spaceship. Together, they search for her mother. Over time, Rosalina and the Luma become very close, and they build the Comet Observatory, which becomes home to many more Luma, effectively making Rosalina their mother. As she watches over the cosmos, she comes to terms with the loss of her own mother and grows into a strong leader, ultimately meeting Mario along the way.
Princess Peach rules the Mushroom Kingdom and is known for her kindness. While she can protect herself, she’s frequently kidnapped by villains like Bowser, and Mario usually has to rescue her. Over time, though, Peach has become a strong character in her own right, demonstrating her lasting appeal. Despite this, her story has never connected with Mario’s, even though there were initial ideas to do so.
During the creation of Super Mario Galaxy, the team briefly considered making Rosalina and Peach sisters or relatives, noticing their strong visual similarities – even their hairstyles felt connected. However, creator Shigeru Miyamoto ultimately rejected this concept, which later became central to The Super Mario Galaxy Movie. Looking back, the movie’s retcon feels like a fitting tribute to early ideas and a clever way to finally explore a concept that didn’t quite work in the original games.
The Super Mario Galaxy Movie Was Smart to Retcon Peach’s Origin
Peach, unlike Rosalina, hasn’t had a compelling personal story to make her truly memorable beyond being a princess. She’s certainly capable and special, but she’s lacked a strong narrative arc. By changing her backstory and connecting it to Rosalina’s, Peach gains a greater sense of purpose and control over her own destiny – something she didn’t have when she was just a princess in need of rescue.
This also allows for creative exploration, letting developers test out story ideas in a separate world without risking changes that dedicated fans might dislike. It also finally unlocks Peach’s hidden potential, something that’s always been hinted at but never fully developed. Now reimagined as a princess with cosmic powers and endless possibilities, it’s easy to understand why the Toads would be so quick to support her.
It’s understandable that viewers of The Super Mario Galaxy Movie were disappointed the sisters’ connection wasn’t fully shown on screen – it’s a significant reveal for fans. However, the idea itself isn’t flawed just because it wasn’t explored in this film. It simply means their relationship will hopefully be developed further in a future movie, which would be a fresh addition to the franchise.
The way the movie reintroduced Rosalina’s backstory was clever, keeping both new and old fans guessing. It showed that even established stories can still surprise us, and that Nintendo has more to reveal about its characters. While The Super Mario Galaxy Movie didn’t fully showcase Rosalina and Peach’s powers, it hints at exciting possibilities for their future interactions.
