The Stunning Stephen King Movie No One Believed Could Work Has Marched Straight to #1 on Its Digital Debut

For decades, movies have consistently attracted large audiences in theaters. But in a surprising turn of events, 2025 has brought two adaptations of the author’s lesser-known works, known as the “Bachman Books,” to the big screen. Glen Powell will star in The Running Man this November, but first, another Bachman adaptation has quickly moved from dominating box office numbers to reaching the number one spot on the iTunes chart after becoming available digitally earlier this week.

Originally published in 1979 under the pseudonym Richard Bachman, Stephen King‘s The Long Walk was long considered unadaptable for the screen. But a recent film adaptation, directed by Francis Lawrence, has proven critics wrong. The dystopian thriller has become one of the most critically acclaimed King movies in thirty years, and was a financial success, earning $55 million on a $20 million budget.

The movie takes place in a dark, alternate version of the 1970s and centers around a yearly televised event much like the premise of The Running Man. This event is an endless marathon where fifty boys are forced to walk at a constant pace of three miles per hour. If a boy slows down and ignores warnings from the armed soldiers monitoring them, he is killed. The ‘Long Walk’ continues until only one boy is left standing, and that survivor is granted any wish and enough wealth to live comfortably for the rest of his life.

The movie The Long Walk has received very positive reviews. It initially scored in the high 90s on Rotten Tomatoes, currently holding at 88%, and audiences have given it an 85% rating. Critics and viewers alike are praising the film’s script, performances, and its surprisingly timely themes. The Long Walk is now performing well with its release for digital purchase, building on its strong performance in theaters worldwide.

Making ‘The Long Walk’ Engaging Was No Easy Task

It’s easy to see why no one had ever tried to adapt The Long Walk into a film before – watching a group of young men walk and die, one by one, for over an hour and a half doesn’t exactly scream ‘compelling entertainment.’ But for Mark Yoshikawa, the film’s editor, that was precisely what made the project interesting. He explained to Movieweb:

Right from the start, I realized keeping the movie engaging would be difficult. The story is very simple – essentially, the characters just walk from place to place with minimal plot. You could summarize the entire movie in a single sentence. Because of this, almost every scene involves characters walking, and while that might be dull if it happened in a stationary setting, the constant movement at least offers some visual interest.

One of the biggest challenges editing this film was that the order of events was fixed by who died when. It started with a large group of around fifty people, and the number steadily decreased. Seeing that happen on the big screen was really impactful – all the initial energy and sound of a crowd gradually fading until it felt like only a handful of people were left, then just a few.

You can now watch The Long Walk on digital platforms. The Running Man will be in theaters on November 14, 2025.
