The Scrubs ‘Revival’s Dr. Cox Twist Sets Up Expanded John C. McGinley Role in Season 2

Be warned, this review contains spoilers for Scrubs revival Episode 8, “My Odds.” I’ve really enjoyed every episode of the Scrubs revival so far, and while many have been nearly perfect, Episode 8 is the first one since the show returned that truly hits the mark. It perfectly blends humor, heart, and the show’s signature irreverence. This balance is expertly done, making the second-to-last episode of the season a 21-minute comedic and dramatic gem. However, it also leaves you feeling anxious about what’s to come for the show.

The cast and crew of Scrubs have been talking a lot about a potential Season 2 at ABC, even though it hasn’t been officially confirmed yet. Considering the strong positive response to the new episodes from both fans and critics, many believe an announcement is coming soon. And with the episode “My Odds” already setting the stage, a moving, season-long story arc seems likely when the show gets renewed.

Dr. Cox’s Renal Failure Diagnosis Sets up Far More Than Just the Season 1 Finale

The upcoming finale of Scrubs, the show’s first since 2010, promises to be quite emotional. Before the surprise return of John C. McGinley as Dr. Cox in the episode “My Odds,” it was already known that Neil Flynn (as the Janitor) and Christa Miller (as Jordan) would be appearing. These characters were fan favorites during the show’s most popular years, and viewers have been hoping for their return in the revival. So, the finale was shaping up to be a very funny episode. Then, the diagnosis of Dr. Cox with kidney failure added a layer of heartfelt sadness that’s become a signature part of what makes Scrubs so special.

Starting a major, emotional story about Dr. Cox’s worsening health with only one episode left feels like a setup for a longer arc. This storyline clearly needs more than just the finale to be properly developed. The recent episode, “My Odds,” showed Dr. Cox and JD being unusually open with each other, making it unlikely they’ll resolve this complex situation in a single episode. Considering Dr. Cox’s illness is incurable, it’s reasonable to assume the story of JD caring for him will continue beyond the upcoming finale.

The first season of the Scrubs revival ends with the ninth episode on Wednesday, April 2026. You can watch it at 8 PM Eastern Time on ABC, and it will be available to stream on Hulu the next day.

This isn’t just wishful thinking. Zach Braff has confirmed that the storyline bringing back Christa Cox’s character is designed to allow John McGinley to appear more frequently if Scrubs gets a second season. Braff told TVLine that they’re setting things up so McGinley can be involved much more if the show is renewed. McGinley has been busy with another role on HBO’s Rooster this season, which limited his availability for Scrubs.

While scheduling might not be a major problem if Scrubs comes back, I think having McGinley work less has actually been a good thing. Dr. Cox is such a strong personality, and his time away has allowed the new characters to develop. However, I’m really looking forward to Season 2, especially since the writers clearly want to feature Dr. Cox more. I just hope the show still has plenty of funny moments alongside the emotional ones. The TikTok scene at the end of “My Odds,” where JD shows Dr. Cox a video, gives me hope that it will, just like Scrubs has always balanced humor and drama so well.

“My Odds” Isn’t Just Great at Setting up a More Substantial Dr. Cox Comeback

John C. McGinley’s appearance is the main focus of the “My Odds” episode, but the episode also develops other storylines. While it does a great job of strengthening the relationships between the original characters, the new additions, like Asher (Jacob Dudman) and Sam (Ava Bunn), also get opportunities to stand out. The episode proves they are well-developed, well-acted, and complex characters within the world of Scrubs. Their scenes with established favorites like Elliot (Sarah Chalke) and Turk (Donald Faison) are among the best examples of how well the revival series has blended the old and new cast members – a much more successful approach than the earlier, and now altered, Med School episodes.

Beyond everything else, the episode “My Odds” really stood out as the first time the Scrubs revival had multiple dream-like sequences in one episode. While the show has tried this a few times since it came back, those moments were usually very short or not very imaginative. The scene with JD and Turk playfully floating through the hospital, and the gameshow bit where Dr. Cox won a jet ski, were both wonderfully over-the-top and made me realize the revival hadn’t fully embraced these kinds of creative moments until now. The show has been great since it returned, but “My Odds” proves it can still deliver truly exceptional episodes that rank among the very best of all time.
