Okay, fellow Scrubs fans, let me tell you – the finale, “My Celebration,” was a genuinely heartwarming experience, largely thanks to the return of Neil Flynn as the Janitor! He was noticeably absent for much of the revival, but he absolutely made up for lost time in the final episode. And honestly, the writers cleverly addressed a big issue from the original series. Remember that somewhat jarring reveal about the Janitor back in 2009? They didn’t completely erase it – thankfully, they didn’t pull a full retcon – but they expertly sidestepped it, letting it fade into the background. It felt like a much more respectful approach than what happened with Season 9, and it left me with a really satisfying feeling.
The Janitor from Scrubs is famously enigmatic, and throughout the show, fans were obsessed with discovering his true name. He playfully offered numerous false identities – like Dr. Ján Ïtor, Roscoe, and even Neil Flynn (which was jokingly tied to his appearance in the movie The Fugitive). Even when he seemingly revealed his real name to JD in the 2009 finale, many viewers suspected a trick. While creator Bill Lawrence later confirmed that the Janitor was actually being truthful that time, the show’s recent revival has avoided directly addressing the reveal.
Neil Flynn’s Janitor Isn’t Referred to as Glenn Matthews in “My Celebration”

It’s officially confirmed that the Janitor’s real name is Glenn Matthews, even though many fans have tried to disprove it. Some point to a scene where he’s called “Tommy” shortly after introducing himself as Glenn, suggesting he’s lying. While the Janitor is known for being untruthful, the show’s creator has confirmed that Glenn Matthews is indeed his real name.
It would have made sense for JD to call Flynn “Glenn” in “My Celebration,” even if it felt strange, but accurate. However, that didn’t happen. Instead, just like JD couldn’t recall the Janitor’s real name at the end of Season 8, he quickly fell back to calling him “the Janitor.” This was a smart move by the writers. It keeps the mystery of the Janitor’s name alive in the new season while still respecting the original decision to eventually reveal it.
“My Celebration” Expertly Mirrors the Original Plan for the Janitor

As dedicated fans of Scrubs will recall, the Janitor character wasn’t always meant to be a major player. Originally, in 2001, the creators, led by Bill Lawrence, intended for the Janitor to only interact with JD. While there were a few exceptions, this was generally true in the early episodes. The idea was that the Janitor was essentially a creation of JD’s mind. However, John C. McGinley’s portrayal of the Janitor proved so popular with audiences that the writers expanded his role and abandoned the imaginary concept.
The Janitor became a memorable character, sharing significant scenes and storylines with everyone in the Scrubs cast. While the group already knows him by the time of the revival, the episode “My Celebration” focuses mainly on his interactions with JD. This smaller storyline, where the Janitor unexpectedly starts inspecting things, feels like a clear nod to the early, defining episodes of Scrubs. The illusion that he’s a completely different person holds until the very end, when Darcy Michael’s maintenance worker appears and is revealed to be the Janitor’s son. However, given that Michael also plays a janitor, it makes sense that Scrubs would use his character to reveal the truth.
