Be warned, this article contains spoilers for Episode 6 of the Scrubs revival, “My VIP.” The new actors joining the Scrubs cast have seamlessly blended with the show’s familiar feel, particularly the new group of interns. These five new stars don’t simply imitate the original cast; they feel like unique, well-developed characters who move the show forward while still acknowledging its beloved history – and the nostalgic moments are still fantastic! The interns, in particular, really stand out and establish their own identities.
The sixth episode of the Scrubs revival, titled “My VIP,” shows Asher (Jacob Dudman) and Amara (Layla Mohammadi) finally getting together after weeks of playful flirting. While their connection developed quickly, it’s a romance with potential complications, much like the one JD (Zach Braff) and Elliot (Sarah Chalke) had. However, Asher and Amara are just two of the new group of doctors, and it’s a bit unusual that the other three interns haven’t had any major romantic storylines yet. This isn’t necessarily a problem, though. It helps the show avoid a pattern that began with the very first episode of Scrubs back in 2001, “My First Day.”
‘Scrubs’ Originally Made It Way Too Obvious Which Characters Would End Up Together

Sitcoms often rely on characters finding love to create satisfying conclusions, and Scrubs is no different. Despite JD and Elliot no longer being a couple in the show’s revival, it’s clear the writers want to revisit their complicated romantic history, similar to how it played out in the original series. Their story began in the very first episode back in 2001, and their instant connection suggested they were destined to end up together – which they eventually did, even if it took a few extra seasons.
Turk and Carla’s relationship began in the very first episode of Scrubs. The playful tension between Carla’s dismissive attitude and Turk’s obvious attraction created an instant spark. It was clear from the start that their story would unfold over time. And indeed, they became a couple before the first season ended. While they faced a few challenges, their marriage in Season 3 proved strong and lasting. Scrubs didn’t really keep viewers guessing about who would end up with whom, and that wasn’t a flaw of the show. Sitcoms are generally designed to be comforting and predictable, and Scrubs followed that familiar pattern.
Asher & Amara’s Episode 6 Resolution Seems To Be the Outlier for the ‘Scrubs’ Revival’s Romantic Arcs
Two Members of the Cast Shared Their Thoughts on This With Me (Read On)

Everyone’s rooting for JD and Elliot to get back together, and the show is also quickly building a potential romance between Asher and Amara. Their recent connection might not lead anywhere significant, but it feels like it could. If Asher and Amara do end up together, that leaves Blake, Dashana, and Sam. Right now, none of them seem to be heading towards a romantic relationship, and that’s actually a positive thing. It’s refreshing that the show isn’t forcing every new character to focus solely on finding love.
I was talking with Amanda Morrow recently, and she shared how thrilled she was that Dashana was getting the chance to develop storylines beyond just romance. She explained that it really shows the impact of having a diverse writing team, especially writers of color, because it allows Dashana to focus on her career and, importantly, her friendships. Morrow feels it’s so valuable to see genuine friendships on screen, especially in comedies, where characters can support and help each other grow. Seeing Dashana and Amara’s sweet connection in “My VIP,” I completely agree with her! If the writers were rushing Dashana into a romance, we wouldn’t get these wonderful, character-driven storylines.
I also spoke with David Gridley, who shared his thoughts on the limited focus on Blake’s romantic life. He revealed that the writers initially intended for his character to be a bit of a womanizer, but they moved away from that idea, which has ultimately given Blake more complexity. “It’s super interesting,” Gridley explained, adding that receiving scripts weekly is like opening a gift – you never know what to expect. He found all the interns’ storylines intriguing, but particularly praised the writers for the slow, deliberate way they’ve developed Blake. As someone who initially had trouble connecting with the character, I appreciate that Blake is now getting a chance to shine and demonstrate his value in the revival. Gridley is right – watching Blake grow as both a person and a doctor is much more compelling than simply seeing him have a series of romantic encounters.
The ‘Scrubs’ Revival’s Restrictive Format Has Helped the Pacing of the Interns’ Romantic Arcs

Even though Scrubs is a traditional network show with roughly 21-minute episodes, the original series managed to create complex and moving stories. The recent revival struggles to do this, largely because it only received an order for nine new episodes, compared to the 20+ episodes a season that the original often had. This meant the classic Scrubs had ample time to develop relationships, explore medical cases, and create emotional depth – something difficult to achieve with a shorter season. Plus, there’s no certainty that the show will return for a second season.
| The Scrubs Revival‘s New Interns | |
| Character | Actor |
| Dr. Blake Lewis | David Gridley |
| Dr. Sam Tosh | Ava Bunn |
| Dr. Amara Hadi | Layla Mohammadi |
| Dr. Asher Green | Jacob Dudman |
| Dr. Dashana Trainor | Amanda Morrow |
When it comes to classic sitcom-style romance, the spotlight in the revival really belongs to just Asher and Amara. And with a larger cast this time around – though not all the original actors are back, and some have smaller roles – there are actually more new faces than returning actors missing. Considering this, and the fact that the revival only has nine episodes, it makes sense that the show is focusing on other parts of the characters’ lives instead of diving deeply into potential love stories. While romance is important in sitcoms, it’s not the only thing that matters, and I appreciate that Scrubs seems to understand that.
