The ‘Scrubs’ Revival Casts Doubt on Asher & Amara’s Rapid Happy Ending [Exclusive]

Be warned, this article contains spoilers for the recent Scrubs revival episode, “My Best Friend’s Barbecue.” The returning cast members have mostly continued the stories from the original series, meaning the new characters have provided most of the fresh storylines. While several new faces have appeared, the younger doctors have been the focus of arcs that began with the first episode of the revival, “My Return.” It’s been well-handled – introducing them gradually has allowed them to feel like a natural part of the show and blend in well with the original characters.

One storyline in the new season of Scrubs has been particularly interesting. It’s been developing throughout the episodes and has been enjoyable to watch. While it reminds us of a classic plotline from the original series, it also feels fresh. However, Episode 6, “My VIP,” seemed to wrap things up neatly—though quickly. Then, Episode 7, “My Best Friend’s Barbecue,” unexpectedly complicated things, setting the stage for more drama.

Asher & Amara’s Will-They/Won’t-They Storyline Is Immediately Revived In Episode 7

In Episode 6, Jacob Dudman’s Asher and Layla Mohammadi’s Amara eased viewers’ worries by finally getting together in the on-call room. After weeks of build-up, it felt like a predictable, yet satisfying, moment – almost like something out of a classic sitcom. Considering the short season, it’s remarkable how much the Scrubs revival made audiences invested in whether Asher and Amara would become a couple.

Asher and Amara have been enjoyable characters, but it’s obvious the writers intended them to create the same romantic tension that existed between JD and Elliot. Instead of becoming the seemingly perfect couple they initially appeared to be, their relationship is now complicated by conflicting desires: Amara wants freedom and excitement, while Asher is looking for something serious.

Considering how sitcoms usually handle storylines like this, I shouldn’t be shocked by this unexpected twist. I had hoped Scrubs was just rushing through things, but that doesn’t seem to be happening. It looks like we won’t get a resolution in the last two episodes of Season 1, especially with Dr. Cox (John C. McGinley) returning in Episode 8 and other original cast members appearing in the finale after being largely absent so far. It appears the romantic tension between Asher and Amara may have peaked for now, and their relationship will likely develop further if the show gets a second season.

What Jacob Dudman & Layma Mohammadi Told Me About Their Characters’ Shared Storyline

I recently interviewed the actors who play Asher and Amara, and they offered some interesting thoughts about their characters on Scrubs. When asked about stepping into the roles of the show’s new potential couple, similar to J.D. and Elliot, Mohammadi explained that the writers wanted them to create their own unique dynamic. However, she also acknowledged the connections to the original series, like filming in the same memorable utility closet. The conversation became even more revealing when I asked how much the actors knew about their characters’ storylines when they first joined the show.

Dudman felt a connection between Asher and Amara was brewing even during the audition process. He recalled a scene where his character argued with Blake’s about Mohammadi’s character, and he believes this scene later evolved into the moment where Asher stares at Amara in Episode 6, “My Angel.” Mohammadi herself had some idea of what to expect with her character’s storyline when filming the revival in Vancouver, but didn’t have the full picture.

You can watch new episodes of Scrubs on ABC every Wednesday, and they become available on Hulu the next day, Thursdays.

She confirmed what her co-star, David Gridley, had told me: the actors were receiving new script pages every week. This meant the newer cast members were discovering details about their characters as they went, instead of knowing the whole story from the start. “It felt like we were constantly figuring things out,” Mohammadi explained. “Each week brought new insights into who our characters were and how they related to each other, so we were often as surprised by the plot as the audience was.”

I asked the actors what they’d like to see happen with their characters beyond their love story, and they both had interesting ideas. Mohammadi hopes to see Amara become more confident and outgoing, building on her growth from the first season. Dudman wants to explore Asher’s past, specifically how taking care of his father will impact his future. Now, we just need ABC to renew the show for another season so we can see these storylines unfold.
